ABOUT THE JOBThe ACLU seeks a full-time position of Assistant Controller in the Finance Department of the ACLU's National office in New York, NY.Responsible for safeguarding the financial resources of the organization, the Finance team manages the financial activities of the National ACLU. From paying vendors to forecasting budgets, and everything in-between, we take pride in providing the resources and the platform for informed financial decision-making.Reporting directly to the Controller, the Assistant Controller manages the day-to-day operations of several key accounting functions, providing both leadership and expertise to the team. Our ideal candidate will have strong management experience and functional expertise, possess an exceptional attention to detail, an orientation towards being of service, and a passion for the work of the ACLU.RESPONSIBILITIESThe following overview of responsibilities is intended to describe the type of work which will be assigned to this position. It is not an exhaustive list of all specific duties required by the employee:LeadershipLead by example in managing a team of accounting professionals, driving results through the use of data, direct feedback and strong accountability in a supportive and learning-driven environment that fosters high staff engagement and professional growthServe as subject matter expert for functional area under management; establish and maintain internal controls related to revenue reconciliation that adhere to accounting best practice, ensuring procedures for timely and efficient processing are in place, and monitor compliance with state and/or federal policies, adherence to accounting best practices .Oversee the management of monthly revenue recording and reconciliation processes, ensuring relevant information properly reflected in the general ledger, any discrepancies are researched and resolved with the appropriate parties, and relevant schedules are accurately completed on a timely basisCoordinate with members of Development, PTEC, and Finance to oversee the accounting revenue recognition work flow process; ensure revenue reports are aligned with cash reconciliations and that data feeds from donor database to accounting system are accurate and provide necessary detailReview revenue related reports for internal and external stakeholdersAnalyze the budget to actual releases and reconcile actual releases to net asset balancesReview of grant and pledge agreements on a monthly basis in order to verify proper net asset classificationReview of Bank Reconciliation for all cash accounts on a monthly basisOversee revenue reconciliation process with affiliates from all fifty statesInvestment & Cash Accounting & Reporting OperationsOversee accounting for investments, ensuring any identified discrepancies between custodian reports and the general ledger are investigated and resolvedReview monthly and/or quarterly investment schedules, investment activity in the general ledger and monthly and quarterly roll-forwardsReview monthly and quarterly investment reports for affiliates, respond to inquiries regarding their investment balances managed by National, and resolve any issues as necessaryOversee accounting and reconciliation processes for cash accounts, ensuring all transactions are properly recorded and reconciliations are completed and reviewed on a timely basis each monthPrepare and/or review workpapers and schedules for the annual audit and respond to inquiries from the auditors as neededCompliance & ReportingAssist with relevant audits, including liaising with auditors, preparation and/or review of audit materials and schedules, and managing deliverable deadlines with internal contributors and auditors.Perform periodic internal audits of accounting transactions and procedures to ensure quality control over financial data and alignment with relevant fiscal policies.Assists with preparation of periodic tax and regulatory filings, providing accurate data for internal review and timely submission to appropriate agenciesEnsure periodic federal and state payroll tax and employment data filings are accurate and timelyProduce and/or review monthly, quarterly and annual accounting schedules and reports, including account reconciliations, allocations, net asset and revenue release schedulesSuggest and implement accounting policies and procedures based on industry and accounting best practicesEXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONSStrong interpersonal skills that contribute to a collegial working environmentExcellent organizational and planning skills with demonstrated ability to create structures to effectively manage personal and team deliverablesDemonstrated ability to speak and write in succinct, informative and friendly manner such that content, expectations and timelines are clearly understood by audienceAbility to manage multiple priorities from a variety of sources; prioritizing effectively to impact areas of greatest need and meet deadlinesProficiency with Microsoft ExcelCommitment to the mission of the ACLUPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS10+ years of relevant work experience with at least 4 years leading a teamCPA with extensive knowledge of GAAP and current accounting best practices, including upcoming regulatory changes to reporting requirementsAdvanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software; aptitude for learning new financial technologyHigh proficiency in Microsoft Office products required, with advanced skills in Excel (pivot tables, vlookups, if statements)Experience with web and digital platformsCOMPENSATIONThe annual salary for this position is $143,943 (Level E). This salary is reflective of a position based in New York, NY. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.
