Job Title: Medical Abstractor - Trauma Management

Job Summary: To abstract, submit, validate, track, and analyze, patient information from a range of sources to include medical records and interviews with staff or patients for the purposes of research activities. To code the information and input into relevant database according to prescribed protocol.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in health care or related field or graduate of an approved school of Medical Record Technology or successful completion of independent study course conducted by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or High School diploma/GED and three (3) years of coding or abstracting experience.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:

Prefer American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-Based (CCS-P), or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H), prefer either Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) by AIHMA.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of patent charts and medical terminology. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Ability to read and interpret medical terminology.

Responsibilities

Identifies and compiles patient data from a variety of relevant sources. Abstracts medical information and codes into database in accordance with established policies and procedures.. Reviews data for completeness and accuracy; investigates the location of missing or not readily accessible information. Tracks patients and collects follow-up data as appropriate. Responds to internal and external inquiries. Maintains knowledge of medical terminology and documentation trends. Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical and Environmental Demands Requires occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
