Teachers Retirement Association (TRA) has been administering pension coverage to Minnesota educators for decades, with a mission to help members and their beneficiaries plan for an independent and financially secure retirement. We are currently seeking job candidates with strong leadership, communication, and mathematical skills to serve as a Member Benefits Supervisor within our Member Benefits department.
Our Member Benefits Supervisor position exists to plan, direct, audit, and control multiple business functions within the department to ensure members receive reliable and comprehensive information regarding their benefit payments. This role will participate in making recommendations and implement strategic business plan initiatives to ensure TRA meets its operational goals. The incumbent hired will further be required to collaborate with the Retirement Services Directors and Executive Team Members to bring forward “best practices” to meet our internal and external stakeholders needs.
This position is located in our St. Paul, Minnesota office and will require the incumbent to work a schedule that includes in-person work. Additionally, the incumbent hired into this position must also possess the ability to secure their own transportation for in-state conferences and/or in-person trainings. Travel may be required up to 10% of the time for this role.
Minimum Qualifications
Four (4) years of progressive professional experience providing customer service related to employee benefits administration, government benefits administration, accounting, payroll, finance, or insurance.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Math, Public Administration, or closely related field can substitute for one (1) year of experience.
Experience must also demonstrate the following:
Leadership responsibility requiring the supervision/leadwork of staff and/or management of major enterprise projects.
Demonstrated experience performing and auditing complex calculations.
Ability to administer and interpret current pension law and the ability to provide analysis of proposed legislation including impact on members and the member benefits department.
Ability to motivate, monitor, coach, and/or provide constructive feedback to employees.
Ability to plan, organize, and successfully manage competing priorities and deadlines.
Ability to diagnose problems and recommend solutions for internal control best practices and process improvement purposes.
Strong interpersonal, written communication, and verbal communication skills necessary to collaborate on enterprise projects and initiatives; communicate information about sensitive topics; influence others to resolve conflicting viewpoints; train and present to a variety of stakeholders; and champion a work culture that advocates for inclusion.
Advanced proficiency in using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook; Cisco WebEx; or equivalent software packages.
All incumbents must also possess the ability to secure their own transportation for in-state business travel. Travel may be required up to 10% of the time for this role.
Preferred Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Math, Public Administration, or closely related field.
Experience working for Teachers Retirement Association, Public Employees Retirement Association, Minnesota State Retirement System, and/or another public pension organization.
Extensive knowledge of defined benefit calculation/systems and/or coordination of system enhancement testing.
Supervisory or management experience.
Physical Requirements
This position requires occasional transporting of articles such as file folders, ledgers and/or small tools. May be required to move or maintain a stationary position for long periods of time.
