Product Owner
Overview
A professional responsible for establishing, detailing, prioritizing, and evaluating the work generated by the business for their dedicated scrum team to ensure features and functionality of the product align with business needs. The Product Owner will assist the Sprint Team, Scrum Master, and/or Technical Lead in defining requirements.
Job Details
Process Management
- Assist business teams and cross-competency teams in completing tasks related to application design. This includes the following: requirements definition, requirements analysis, process analysis (process mapping); requirements change management.
User Story Development
- Coordination and documentation of detailed description of user needs, program functions, and steps required to develop or modify business systems including story details.
Team Backlog Maintenance
- With input from the Project Manager and other stakeholders, the PO has the primary responsibility for building, editing, and maintaining the sprint team backlog. Consisting mostly of user stories. This includes new features, tech debt, system maintenance, and security vulnerabilities.
Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with business representatives (both internal and external) in Project Management, IT, and various business teams/roles to develop User Stories with necessary requirements for business solutions. Work with UX department to engage with end users for look, feel, and functionality of features to be built.
Communication
- Ownership for all internal and necessary external communications to ensure transparent and thorough understanding of User Stories, acceptance criteria, project status, and task accountability. Effectively communicate priorities, and opportunity costs, and use data to inform decisions.
Sprint Team Involvement
- Attend daily team stand-ups and assist with determining priorities and work with the ScrumMaster to help with any blockers the team is currently facing. Follow progress of work and address production issues during sprint. Work with QA, developers, and stakeholders to create acceptance criteria and testing plans. Facilitate UAT demos and testing sign off with Stakeholders and end users.
Self-Directed Work
- The knowledge and experience gained should be put to use by the Product Owner to take the initiative for assigned work, know what steps are needed in order to complete a project or task, and provide regular updates to management as well as all parties involved.
Agile Process Improvements
- The Product owner in this advanced role is expected to be a source of knowledge and insight into the agile process within the company and how it can be improved upon.
Non-Traditional Product Owner Tasks
- Tasks that are not traditional but that are still related to the Product Owner role may be assigned to further develop knowledge in a specific area which could include but is not limited to UX/UI Design, Developer work such as familiarity of basic coding principles and working within test environments, QA tasks, and coordinating special projects between IT and business Units.
Job Requirements
Required
Associate degree in a related area and/or equivalent 2-4 years' experience in a related area or any combination of secondary education and experience
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to collaborate with a diverse set of business customers and drive consensus when conflicting requirements are
Experience documenting how customer requirements are transformed into service the company can provide.
Ability to dissect technical problems, analyze data, and recommend potential solutions
Knowledge of agile and scrum methodology
Certified Scrum and/or Product Owner certification
Experience with Jira, and other tools such as Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Visio, Power Point, etc.
Customer relationship management experience
General knowledge of software development tools and terminology
Knowledge of insurance products and experience with insurance company operations, organization, procedures, and policies
Desired
Experience as a Scrum Master and/or Subject Matter Expert
Advanced Product Owner Certification
Proven history of prioritizing multiple high visibility projects simultaneously
Confidence in navigating rapid changes in work type, team collaboration, and delivery expectations
