The role involves working on critical systems such as PCOS, CCQAS, DMHRSi, EAS IV, ESSENCE, and PHIMT, which are essential for managing healthcare claims, provider credentialing, human resources, cost allocation, disease surveillance, and health information management. Arlluk Technology Solutions, is seeking an experienced Database Engineer to support and optimize database systems critical to the Military Health System. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in database design, implementation, and management, with the ability to ensure high performance, security, and reliability of complex healthcare data systems. This role is crucial in maintaining and enhancing the data infrastructure that supports vital MHS applications.
Essential Functions, Responsibilities & Duties may include, but are not limited to:
The Database Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing database systems that support MHS applications. Key responsibilities include:
Design and implement efficient, scalable database architectures for MHS applications.
Optimize database performance through indexing, query tuning, and schema refinement.
Develop and maintain data models, database schemas, and data dictionaries.
Implement and manage database security measures, including access controls and encryption.
Design and implement backup and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and availability.
Collaborate with application developers to optimize database interactions and query performance.
Monitor database systems for performance issues and capacity planning.
Perform database migrations, upgrades, and patches with minimal downtime.
Implement and manage high-availability solutions such as clustering and replication.
Develop and maintain database documentation, including standard operating procedures.
Troubleshoot complex database issues and provide expert-level support.
Stay current with emerging database technologies and best practices, recommending improvements as appropriate.
Education and Experience:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field with 5-7 years of experience in database engineering, or
Master's degree in a relevant field with 3-5 years of experience in database engineering, or
PhD in a relevant field with 0-2 years of experience in database engineering
Required Skills and Competencies:
Extensive experience with relational database management systems (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL)
Strong knowledge of SQL and database programming
Experience with database performance tuning and query optimization
Proficiency in designing and implementing database schemas and data models
Knowledge of database security best practices and implementation
Experience with database backup, recovery, and high-availability solutions
Familiarity with data warehousing concepts and ETL processes
Understanding of storage systems and data architecture
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with diverse stakeholders
Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
Desired Skills and Competencies:
Experience working in government or military healthcare environments
Knowledge of healthcare IT systems and standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR, DICOM)
Familiarity with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra)
Experience with cloud-based database services (e.g., Amazon RDS, Azure SQL Database)
Knowledge of big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark)
Experience with database automation and DevOps practices
Familiarity with data governance and compliance requirements (e.g., HIPAA, FISMA)
Understanding of machine learning and AI applications in database management
Experience with graph databases and their applications in healthcare
Knowledge of database containerization and orchestration technologies
Working Environment & Conditions
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
This position is primarily indoors, consistent with a standard office position and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. The incumbent is required to stand, walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The workload may require the incumbent to sit for extended periods of time. The incumbent must be able to read, do simple math calculations and withstand moderate amounts of stress.
