The Iowa Clinic Registered Nurse (RN) Oncology & Hematology role is critical to providing support to our providers, safe and appropriate care for our patients, strengthening operational quality, and ultimately improving clinical patient outcomes. This role assists in educating patients and their families on the cancer diagnosis and explaining treatment options and processes. May assist in administering chemotherapy under the direction of a physician and provides support for managing chemotherapy side effects. Also guides cancer survivors in ongoing prevention, surveillance, and intervention.

Arrive at work in the morning - no night shifts here! Provide nursing services for clinic patients consistent with established professional nursing standard such as patient assessment, including vital signs, medication intake, and complete patient history. Coordinate and monitor required laboratory and diagnostic procedures as indicated. Mix, administrator, monitor, and document medications such as chemotherapy, hydration and other medications as ordered. Perform phlebotomy procedures including peripheral IVs and drawing blood from catheters and ports. Apply the knowledge of cancer disease process, treatment, side effects, and complications in anticipation of the patient's emotional and practical needs. Facilitate and support the interdisciplinary team communication between nurses, specialists, oncologists, and other health professionals. Provide patients and their families with relevant and evidence-based teaching tools as required. Utilize critical thinking skills when responding to patient requests, pharmacy inquiries, conducting triage and conveying messages to and from providers, clinics, specialists and other care team members. Collaborate with medical support staff and assist with prioritizing clinical tasks to ensure efficient and effective workflows. Assist with training and competency verification of clinical staff. Document all activity appropriately in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) in an accurate and timely manner in accordance with legal requirements, professional nursing standards and hospital/clinic policies. Monitor and work EMR tasks as assigned. Assume responsibility of communicating with patients regarding clinical/medical problems and refer them to appropriate physician as required. Monitor medical supply inventory. Communicate effectively with patients in a manner that protects their confidentiality, uses discretion and is sensitive to their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Maintain awareness of workload of co-workers and offers assistance as needed Share responsibility for keeping work and patient areas safe, clean and organized. Promote a positive and professional image of The Iowa Clinic both internally and externally and promote excellent patient care. Maintain awareness of own safety in carrying out duties and responsibilities. Adheres to universal precautions and infection control policies and procedures. Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing Licensure:

Current RN license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa. Certifications:

Oncology Nursing Certification preferred. Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and State of Iowa Mandatory Reporter Certification is required (must be able to obtain within 60 days of hire).

Work Experience:

Previous hematology/oncology nursing experience preferred, but not required Bonus points if...
