Updated June 2024 Our Mission Horizons for Homeless Children is a Boston-based non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of young children experiencing homelessness in Massachusetts. We help their families succeed by providing high-quality early education, opportunities for play, and comprehensive family support services. Our advocacy efforts extend our impact and advance our vision of ending homelessness among families with young children. Summary of Position The Playspace Assistant Director oversees all aspects of the Playspace Program, ensuring that children in Massachusetts homeless shelters have access to developmentally appropriate play. They oversee volunteer recruitment, training, and placement processes, supervise Playspace Program Specialists, and ensure Playspaces are well-equipped and operational. The Assistant Director also supports volunteer communication, training, and retention efforts, coordinates data management, and collaborates with outreach efforts to expand volunteer participation statewide. Responsibilities Supervision and Team Management Lead and directly supervise a team of 5-7 staff members and interns to ensure a high-quality experience for 600+ volunteers across 70+ shelter-based Playspaces. Responsible for delivering talent management best practices, including performance management, professional development, retention strategies, and transitions/hiring when needed. Volunteer Management and Support Manage volunteer trainings, events, activities, and workshops, providing guidance on age-appropriate activities and behavior management strategies for children aged 0-6. Oversee the quality and content of volunteer training in collaboration with the Program Specialists. Playspace Management Ensure optimal equipment and operational readiness of all Playspaces; oversee organization and restocking efforts. Review recruitment, placement, and communication practices with Playspace team members to enhance volunteer program quality. Outreach and Recruitment Work with team to expand regional outreach efforts to target audiences in communities with shelters, including community, corporate, and media outreach and marketing initiatives. Support recruitment, training, placement, and retention of volunteers in area programs serving homeless children and families. Program Partner Relationships Develop and maintain strong relationships with program and shelter partners through on-site visits, scheduled meetings, check-in calls, and other communication efforts. Oversee the onboarding and training of new shelters to ensure proper implementation of Playspace policies and procedures. Starting salary range, compensation, and benefits $70,000.00– $74,000 is the starting salary range for our Assistant Director level roles. Your starting salary will fall within that range depending on your competencies, experience, and skillset. A minimum 8 years of related professional work experience with 2-4 years volunteer management experience. Experience with ‘at risk’ populations a plus. Database experience required, including data entry, reporting, and basic analysis. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is required, as frequent travel to shelters is expected. Knowledge of early childhood development required. Effective supervisory skills with a strengths-based and mutual respect approach. Ability to plan inclusive activities to boost staff morale and create a positive work environment. Demonstrated success in using current Windows operating systems (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel). Commitment to continuous improvement and contributing to problem-solving discussions. Dynamic, action-oriented team leader. Excellent public speaking skills. Goal oriented, highly organized, excellent collaborator. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to manage a complex volunteer network. Ability to work flexible hours which will include weekday evenings and occasional weekends.
