Camp Cherokee Evening Program Director

POSITION SUMMARY:
To provide safe and fun evening programs through YMCA Camp Cherokee’s program design and implementation, specific to camper age differences at Camp Cherokee. Effectively manage and evaluate summer camp staff in providing high quality evening programs.
Responsibilities:
Plan, manage and supervise safe and fun evening programs to campers. Effectively plan, organize and facilitate evening programs on a daily basis. Organize special events and off site visits during the summer. Manage evening program success and the development of the campers’ skills and abilities, specifically evaluating age differences. Create and monitor staff supervision schedules during evening programs. Communicate all evening camp program needs and expectations with staff. Monitor weather, and create contingency plans for evening programs. Facilitate “Pow Wow” sessions with an enthusiastic and creative attitude. Create daily skits to communicate evening activities to campers. Communicate camp announcements to campers and staff. Manage the upkeep of all programming facilities, areas and equipment. Create an inventory and manage all evening programming equipment. Discuss planning and implementation during staff training(s). Ensure campers and staff adhere to safety precautions when participating in programming. Manage evening program areas and ensure hazards are kept to a minimum. Supervise and evaluate counselors to develop and implement all expectations of evening program activities. Regularly monitor counselor interaction during evening programs. Evaluate counselors evening program implementation and provide constructive feedback. Establish responsibilities for counselors during evening programs to grow and learn as camp professionals. Assist other program staff when needed. Opening/Closing Day Responsibilities. Assist Daily Program Director. Plan and supervise campers and staff during “bridge” sessions. Actively assist in “OD” responsibilities. Assist with supervision during off site trips. Endure a creative process when programming to create an enthusiastic culture for both campers and staff. Identify, maintain and create an inventory of all program equipment. Note when repairs are needed or new program materials are needed. Qualifications:
Must be 21 years of age or have completed at least two years of college. Must be certified in First Aid and CPR. Must attend all pre-camp training, retreats, and opening training session. Possess leadership qualities and ability to use sound judgment. Good health, enthusiasm, individual maturity, moral character, team qualities, and communication skills. Possess interest in the development of children. Must be able to endure hot temperatures, physical exertion, manual labor, behavioral conflicts, and must be able to walk, run, and swim every day. Physical requirements of the Evening Program Director at Camp Cherokee include endurance during prolonged activities, bending, stooping and lifting. Other physical aspects include the ability to observe and manipulate program activities, to meet the needs and skill levels of both campers and staff members.
