Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Patient Care/OB Surgical Assistant is primarily responsible for providing health care to patients. The Patient Care Assistant participates in data collection, planning, and implementation of patient care. The Patient Care/OB Surgical Assistant is an individual who assists the members of the surgical team by scrubbing and handling the appropriate instruments, supplies and equipment, etc., necessary to provide optimal patient care during a surgical intervention. This individual also assists other team members in order to create a smooth, functioning unit.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ability to prioritize duties and function as a member of a team.
  • Performs clinical procedures within scope of practice.
  • Performs, Glucometry, phlebotomy procedures and collects specimens, Newborn Hearing Screen.
  • Follows treatment plan as directed by Clinical Coordinator/RN.
  • Transcribes orders, re-sheets charts, and schedules tests/procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to use computer system.
  • Performs necessary functions to ensure patient safety, comfort, and satisfaction with service.
  • Assists patients to mobilize as appropriate.
  • Communicates new orders, change in patient’s condition, and unit concerns with the unit-based team.
  • Restocks unit supplies as needed according to specific checklists.
  • Completes documentation per hospital policy.
  • Performs 1:1 patient watches as assigned.
  • Assists the registered professional nurse with preparing the operating room with necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Scrubs, gowns and gloves according to hospital standard for closed and opened glove technique.
  • Arranges instruments, table and mayo; arranges instruments correctly and checks for safe working conditions.
  • Maintains necessary counts (sponges, needles, instruments, etc.).
  • Works efficiently as a member of the surgical team during surgical procedures.
  • Anticipates the surgeon’s needs when passing surgical instruments.
  • Handles specimens correctly.
  • Assists in clean-up of instruments and room.
  • Maintains responsibility for own professional development through active participation in in-services and/or continuing education programs.
  • Functions as a role model and resource person providing guidance to co-workers.
  • Complies with established chain of command for work-related problems.
  • Participates in identifying unit needs and supports unit goals and objectives that contribute to the growth of the department.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sit up to 1 hour per day.  Stand for up to 8 hours per day; possibly 6 hours at a time.  Walk up to 8-10 hours per day; up to 2 hours at a time.  (Required to use manual dexterity for handling and twisting/turning.) Consistently lift, carry and push objects up to 10 lbs.; frequently lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds; frequently push objects up to 100+ pounds (i.e., camera carts, microscopes, unicels, etc.).  Frequently stoop and bend.  Frequently reach above shoulder level. Must have the ability to move quickly.  Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, high and low frequencies.  Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision.  Depth perception necessary.  Ability to tolerate visual monotony.

EDUCATION: 

High school graduate; completion of a surgical technology program; Certified Surgical Technologist required-must maintain certification

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: 

Preceptoring and on-the-job training.

WORK SHIFT:

Part time days, as scheduled. 28 hours per week. Weekend and holiday requirements. Shift rotation may be required to meet staffing needs.
