Summary

The Phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of blood specimens from patients of all age groups in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.

+ Collect blood specimens from venous and capillary sites using approved equipment and procedures

+ Identify patients per established patient identification protocols: verbal conformation for outpatients and ID bands for inpatients

+ Document and alert the supervisor of the malfunction of various types of medical equipment used in the performance of job duties

+ Utilize the lab and hospital computer systems to run audit collection lists, sort the workload, and follow up on pending dispatched specimens

+ Utilize the lab system to order tests following downtime requisitions or doctors orders, label specimens and process according to the test requirements.

+ Answers phones and faxes results for patients to physician offices or nursing units

+ Able to print a transport list for reference or receive from a transport list.

+ Helps other team members obtain the collections for the shift within the time parameters set by the ordering priorities.

+ Accession blood and body fluid specimens by entering the appropriate data into the computer systems and labeling them as per established protocols.

+ Complete pre-analytical processing steps by centrifugation when appropriate

+ Deliver specimens to the technical departments for testing

+ Process specimens for reference labs by centrifugation, aliquoting, and completing order entry

+ Clean and initiate phlebotomy carts and supplies as necessary

+ Utilize proper isolation techniques according to hospital policy

+ Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services

+ Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care

Education and Experience

Minimum Required Education: High School diploma or GED; successful completion of a Phlebotomy Technician training program or comparable previous experience

Preferred Education: Not applicable

Experience: Prior experience is preferred, but will consider new graduates

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must hold a current BLS certification or obtain within 3 months

Phlebotomy certification is encouraged and preferred but not required.
