Built in 1836, this beautifully restored building combines historic architecture with modern gallery spaces, creating a unique setting for experiencing art. Hunterdon Art Museum was founded as the Hunterdon County Art Center in 1952 by a group of local artists and business people. Although the name implies that the center was county-owned, it was not. From its very beginnings the organization was a 501(c)3 nonprofit. The founders’ interests were twofold: save the stone mill and create a center where art would flourish. In the seventy years since its founding, the organization’s mission has stayed true to the vision of the founders. The visual arts have always been the Museum’s main focus with art classes and exhibitions being the two streams through which most programs flow. Located in the heart of Clinton's charming downtown, the museum's distinctive stone building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its scenic location along the river's edge provides a striking backdrop for its cultural programming and community events.
