JOB DESCRIPTION

BASIC FUNCTION

:

The assistant elementary school principal promotes a school environment that builds children's confidence in themselves as learners and encourages their desire and joy in learning. He/She is a leader who supports effective practices such as developmentally appropriate early childhood education, meaningful applications of the curriculum to the child's world, flexible times and programs to accommodate varying learning rates of children, integration of curriculum via thematic instruction, and innovative literacy practices. The assistant elementary school principal will encourage home and community involvement among school staff, students, and parents.

The position of Assistant Elementary Principal is a 245-day position and shall include active participation in the District's management team. This position reports directly to and is evaluated annually by the Building Principal.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

The requirements for this position are a minimum of PDE PK-12 Principal Certification, and five years of classroom teaching experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

The Assistant Elementary Principal will be familiar with various elementary curricula and educational programs. He/She will continue periodic review of innovative programs supported by best practice and research. This position requires leadership and ability to involve the staff in program participation and shared decision making.

The Assistant Elementary Principal must be able to articulate the school and District goals regarding the educational program to staff, students, parents and community members. Additional required skills include: (1) ability to promote the educational development of each student through the application of leadership, supervisory, and management skills, (2) ability to weigh options, think clearly, make decisions in a timely, independent manner (as necessary), and adjust (with positive reactions) to a changing environment, (3) ability to continuously monitor, review, and make adjustments, as necessary, to programs and activities within the school to ensure safety and welfare of students and staff, while providing an effective educational program, and (4) aware of computer applications both as an educational and business tool.

AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITIES ((E) Designates Essential Functions)

:

Assists the Building Principal in completing his/her duties and responsibilities. (E) Assists the Building Principal in supervising the process of dealing with issues related to the student's education program, conduct, discipline, and attendance. Additional requirements include accurate record keeping and promoting parental involvement in their child's education.(E) Assists in the implementation of the curriculum and monitoring classroom instruction to ensure that the District Curriculum is delivered to all students. (E) Provides educational leadership in staff development and educational programs, and assists the Building Principal and Elementary Curriculum Supervisor in district wide curriculum inservice training for teachers. (E) Completes annual and periodic evaluations of staff and programs as required by state regulations and/or District policy. (E) Participates in screening process for students with special needs and assists with the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). (E) Assists the Building Principal in developing and managing a budget for the school. Implements policies and practices of the District. (E) Participates in the recruitment, selection, and evaluation of building staff and shares the responsibility for the induction of new staff members. (E) Administers appropriate provisions of negotiated contracts with employee groups and organizations providing services to the schools. Completes reports as required by central office personnel in fulfillment of federal, state, and local needs. (E) Is able to move throughout the building (all floors) and school grounds and as necessary. (E) Is able to speak and write in a clear, concise manner. (E) Provides his/her own transportation to attend meetings (called by central office), approved seminar/conferences, and/or assigned District committees. (E) Supervises the ordering, inventory, and distribution of instructional and non-instructional supplies and materials. Assists the Building Principal and the Elementary Curriculum Supervisor in the development and fiscal management of curricular areas. Is able to maintain a flexible schedule. (E) Participates in legal proceedings as they relate to the welfare of the students. (E) Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Building Principal, the Superintendent or his/her designee.

Physical Requirements:

VERY HEAVY- Exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. This position may involve the controlling of others-seizing, holding, controlling and/or otherwise subduing violent, assaultive or physically threatening persons to defend self or prevent injury. Body strength and agility of all four limbs is required.

Within normal ranges with or without correction.
