The Phlebotomist Senior obtains by venipuncture or capillary puncture, blood samples for laboratory analysis from outpatients in all ages groups as requested by the physician/provider. Assures proper collection of all types of specimens; prepares specimens for analysis by processing orders via LIS; verifies specimen acceptability and performs established pre-analytical procedures in accordance with laboratory policy in an accurate, safe and timely manner. Completes required documentation and provides exceptional customer service to all internal and/or external customers. May perform Point of Care testing, to include performance of basic and CLIA-waived testing, in coordination with laboratory and patient care supervisors ensuring the delivery of quality laboratory care that is in compliance with all applicable accreditation requirements. Depending on assignment, may provide internal and/or external courier services transporting a variety of items, ensuring that deliveries are made within the specific timeframes established by the assigned department.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: Valid driver's license and acceptable driver's record if required to drive between sites required Certification as a Phlebotomist from ASCP or other recognized certification agency preferred Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: Valid driver's license and acceptable driver's record if required to drive between sites required Phlebotomist (ASCP) preferred Experience REQUIRED: N/A Experience PREFERRED: Two (2) to five (5) years' experience in specimen collection techniques (venipuncture, capillary collection, urine collection) and experience with pediatric, adolescent, adults and/or geriatric populations Minimum of one (1) year of experience in laboratory clerical and computer entry function Education/training REQUIRED: High School Diploma or equivalent Education/training PREFERRED: Completion of phlebotomy, nursing assistant or medical assistant training program Independent action(s) required: Performs assigned duties with minimal supervision: Collection of blood from all ages of patients. Contact Client Services or other areas as needed if questions prior to collection of samples. If assigned, performs procedures, evaluates and reports results as outlined in the manual of standard operating procedures. Notifies physician of panic values. Customer service oriented communications. Responds to assignments within the timeframe established by the department. May aid in the decision when a trainee has acquired sufficient phlebotomy skills to work without close supervision. Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): May assist with special projects/assignments. May assumes the duties of the supervisor if needed. Additional position requirements: Employees may be assigned to provide coverage for clients on day and split rotations and volunteer to work as needed to cover second shift rotations when PTO or illness would jeopardize outreach processing operations. May be required to take call after-hours and on weekends on a scheduled rotation basis. The employee is responsible for making changes and reporting them to the supervisor in a timely manner. May require weekend and/or holiday rotation on all shifts as patient care needs dictate. If assigned to external courier services, may be expected to report to work and/or drive during periods of inclement weather.
