SUMMARY: To operate all types of light equipment used in the placement of rock, asphalt and dirt in the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties will be assigned.

Cleans road surfaces and applies and rakes patching material.

Operates an engine-powered broom to clean road surfaces.

Loads and unloads equipment and material from trucks.

Ability to operate a wheel loader in order to load and unload trucks.

Ability to measure distances with tape measure or other like apparatus.

Assists in the repair, maintenance and erection of signs, guardrail, box culverts and bridges.

Assist with traffic control.

Works with asphalt and chip and seal crews as necessary.

Fastens attachments to equipment.

Ability to secure equipment to trailers for safe transportation.

Understands the basic operation of farm tractors, loaders, pull-behind mowers and skid steers used to clear and maintain right-of-way.

Ability to operate chainsaw in a safe manner in order to remove trees from right-of-way.

Uses hand tools such as hammer, shovel, rake or other tools used to maintain right-of-way.

Greases, oils and performs minor repairs on equipment.

Must have a current Class C driver’s license and be able to drive a pickup truck at start of

employment.

Must be available for call outs.

This position is 70% construction based.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to two years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to effectively present information one-on-one or in small groups.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form and carry out duties in the safest and most efficient manner. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY:

Employee is responsible for making purchases in accordance with the Montgomery County’s Procurement Policy, with prior approval from the Road Supervisor.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have current CDL Class A or B. Must be willing to attend training classes as required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must have the ability to learn current road construction and maintenance practices. Must be able to talk with the public and discuss their concerns in a professional manner.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
