Master Control Operator - Part-Time


Position Overview: As a Master Control Operator, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation and broadcast of television and radio programs. You will be responsible for monitoring, controlling, and maintaining the quality of on-air transmissions. This position requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure to ensure uninterrupted broadcasting.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Monitor Broadcast Operations: Monitor multiple channels to ensure proper on-air transmission of scheduled programs, commercials, and promotional materials. Continuously monitor video, audio, closed captions, and other broadcast elements for quality and accuracy.
  2. Control Equipment and Systems: Operate and control various technical equipment, such as routers, servers, automation systems, and video servers, to ensure accurate playout of programs according to the broadcast schedule. Make necessary adjustments to maintain optimal signal quality.
  3. Troubleshoot Technical Issues: Identify and troubleshoot technical problems related to transmission, signal quality, or equipment malfunction. Collaborate with engineers and technicians to resolve issues promptly and minimize downtime.
  4. Adherence to Standards and Regulations: Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and legal requirements related to broadcasting, such as closed captioning, Emergency Alert System (EAS), and program scheduling. Follow established procedures and protocols to maintain broadcast integrity.
  5. Quality Assurance: Perform regular quality checks on incoming and outgoing signals, video files, and program schedules. Verify the accuracy of content, adherence to broadcast standards, and proper functioning of automated systems.
  6. Emergency Response: Act swiftly and effectively during emergency situations, such as power outages, severe weather, or equipment failures. Implement backup plans and emergency procedures to minimize the impact on broadcast operations.
  7. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports detailing transmission activities, equipment status, and any incidents or abnormalities. Communicate critical information to supervisors, technicians, and relevant stakeholders.
  8. Collaboration and Communication: Coordinate with various departments, including programming, production, and engineering teams, to ensure smooth transitions between programs, commercials, and other content. Communicate effectively with team members and provide timely updates on operational activities.
  9. Training and Development: Stay updated with the latest broadcast technologies, equipment, and industry trends. Participate in training programs to enhance technical skills and knowledge of operational procedures.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; relevant certifications or technical training is a plus.
  • Proven experience in broadcast operations, preferably as a master control operator or in a similar role.
  • In-depth knowledge of broadcast equipment, automation systems, video servers, routers, and related technologies.
  • Familiarity with broadcast standards and regulations, including closed captioning, EAS, and program scheduling.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve equipment or signal-related issues.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members and relay critical information.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Physical stamina to sit for extended periods and lift/move equipment when necessary.
