Optical Manufacturing Engineer

An Optical Manufacturing Engineer III is part of the L3Harris Technologies Sonoma EO manufacturing organization and has primary responsibility to support optical procurement, assembly and sensor integration and test.

Manufacturing Engineers are responsible for integrating new products into manufacturing and supporting product manufacturing and repair. Manufacturing Engineers are responsible for establishing and maintaining accurate manufacturing and repair standards and implementing and streamlining assembly and repair processes to reduce waste, process variation, and cost. Optical Specialists demonstrate expertise related to procurement of fabricated optical elements and coatings and the assembly of lens systems including handling, cleaning, fixturing, centering, aligning, bonding and testing. Level III Manufacturing Engineers provide hands-on process engineering support to development, production and repair programs with minimal management instruction and supervision. Level III Manufacturing Engineers are recognized as a leader and technical expert.

Performance Objectives:

Optical manufacturing engineering pay particular attention to optical and electo-optical elements of the following job functions. Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time due to reasonable accommodation or other reasons.
  • Supports, maintains and drives improvements related to Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost (SQDC) metrics for programs and facility wide initiatives.
  • Uses knowledge of optical fabrication and coatings to provide concurrent manufacturing engineering support to the design of complex electo-opto-mechanical systems, including but not limited to DFX and Design to Cost inputs.
  • Supports peer reviews, stage gate design reviews, and design release with production flow, BOM structure and DFX and Design to Cost evaluation.
  • Insures close coordination of manufacturing and test development.
  • Implements NPI processes to integrate new products into manufacturing.
  • Creates and maintains Build Schedules and Production Flow diagrams.
  • Develops and maintains assembly documentation (MPs).
  • Identifies, develops and coordinates procurement and implementation of tooling and build fixtures.
  • Creates and maintains Production & Repairs Routers and Work Orders.
  • Leads efforts to outsource manufacturing operations from procurement through final system test and delivery.
  • Uses optical assembly knowledge to provide process development, build coordination, technical support and troubleshooting assistance to production and repairs.
  • Uses knowledge of optical fabrication and coatings to supports Procurement in the selection, qualification and maintenance of critical vendors.
  • Uses knowledge of optical fabrication, coatings, centration, alignment and handling to supports inspection of optical components and assemblies.
  • Supports the creation and material disposition of ECOs and Redlines.
  • Supports MRB and the creation and material disposition of NCs and FRs.
  • Supports failure investigation related to design, process, and workmanship found in the field and during manufacturing, and recommends and implements corrective actions to design, processes, tooling, equipment and/or training.
  • Supports continues improvement of designs, MPs, production processes and manufacturing engineering processes through the implementation of LEAN principles and Operational Excellence Metrics and countermeasures.
  • Leverages "lessons learned" back into new designs and production in a coordinated manner.
  • Implements LEAN manufacturing processes and Operational Excellence and develops, maintains and reduces Standard Hours and Build Cycle Times.
  • Supports the Bid and Proposal process with production, support and manufacturing development estimates based on historical actuals, Build Standards and Build Cycle Times.
  • Supports development and implementation of the Manufacturing Engineering Department budget, including expensed and capital equipment requests to support production.
  • As an AS9100D Certified Company, it is important to follow internal process to ensure conformance to established policies/procedures and support our quality system by assisting in the development of quality system documentation.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Education - BS Degree (EE, ME, Optics) or other related discipline, or equivalent training/experience. BS Degree in Optics or Electo-Optics or other related discipline, or equivalent training/experience preferred. MS degree preferred.
  • Experience - 8 years' experience in the manufacturing of complex electro-mechanical and/or electro-optical products and/or critical components.
  • Knowledge of Optical Metrology (Interferometers, image quality metrics, alignment and test techniques, Labview, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to provide hands-on optical and/or electro-optical process engineering support to development, production and repair programs with minimal management instruction and supervision.
  • Acknowledged technical leader and technical expert with demonstrated ability to mentor others in the performance of job responsibilities.
  • Must be a US Citizen as defined by NIPSOM and be able to obtain and maintain at a minimum an Active SECRET / T3 security clearance, previous access to TOP SECRET SCI and SAP programs is preferable

Competencies/Skills/Experience:

  • Experienced with optical manufacturing processes and techniques such as tolerancing, diamond turning, grinding, polishing and coatings.
  • Experienced with optical and electro-optical assembly processes and techniques such as fixturing, alignment, centering, staking, bonding, performance testing, handling, and cleaning of optical elements and assemblies.
  • Experience with set-up, maintenance and troubleshooting of optical alignment, centering and test equipment such as collimators, interferometers and laser alignment stations.
  • Experienced with shop floor control activities including training, procedure and router development and maintenance required to appropriately control optical and electro-optical assembly process.
  • Experience with the outsourcing manufacturing operations including procurement through final system test and delivery.
  • Able to understand and apply optical testing principles
  • Knowledge of color science, NTSC, Digital, & PAL standards, and resolution & sensitivity measurements considered an asset
  • Experience in geometrical optics & imaging, radiometry and CCD/CMOS/Thermal Imagers
  • Able to read and understand optical, electo-optical, mechanical and electrical drawings
  • Knowledge of Optical Metrology (Interferometers, image quality metrics, alignment and test techniques, Labview, etc.)
  • Technical background in design, production and/or customer service.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and MS Excel. MS Project and Visio proficiency preferred.
  • Knowledge of CAD systems and Manufacturing ERP systems strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • Experience with DFX (Design for Manufacturability, Cost, Process Variation)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. The ability to interface well at multiple levels within L3Harris.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team-building skills.
  • Ability to make complex decisions with sparse data while adhering to established on-time delivery commitments.
