POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for leading and directing the daily efforts of prototype and production machining using Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machining equipment, Computer Aided Machining (CAM) software, Computer Aided Design (CAD) software and appropriate inspection methods for efficient developmental paths to produce parts within tolerance at optimal cycle times.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the development of machined part fabrication, including but not limited to materials, tooling, programming, simulation, layout, setup, execution and inspection.
  • Oversee daily activities of department machinists ensuring output of equipment and staff align with schedules.
  • Establishes and monitors staff performance and development goals, assigns accountabilities, sets objectives, establishes priorities, conducts annual performance appraisals, and manages performance issues. Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Review and monitor individual part machining processes, proposing refinements where continuity, efficiencies, ergonomics and/or quality can be improved.
  • Lead CAM program development and ensure staff responsibilities align with best practices.
  • Interpret/analyze engineering drawings and specifications to ensure proper fabrication of products
  • Monitor and guide CNC Machinists ensuring compliance with specifications and standards.
  • Leverage quick-change solutions such as foundation systems to create efficient and accurate setups.
  • Design machine and general fixtures within CAD to aid in fabrication processes.
  • Establish speed and feed rates that optimize the machining process.
  • Fabricate, repair, and assemble plastic/metal parts with the operation of mechanical equipment.
  • Oversee the use of standard hand and power tools to assemble parts into subassemblies and products.
  • Oversee machine maintenance to ensure they are working properly. Engage vendors as needed to troubleshoot/upgrade equipment as needed.
  • Ensure parts conform to supplied drawings or requirements. Perform inspection on parts and ensure parts produced meet specifications.
  • Train and conform to company procedures, including maintaining and drafting machine shop operational procedures and practices.
  • Draft and maintain machine shop procedures.
  • Train staff in the operation of machine shop equipment and tools.
  • Ensure proper tooling and materials are available and used for part fabrication.
  • Oversee preventative maintenance of shop machines and tools. Perform maintenance as needed.
  • Specific duties may vary depending upon department requirements.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's degree in a technical discipline or a vocational/technical school degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of twelve years machining experience required.
  • Minimum of ten years CNC programming experience utilizing CAM required.
  • Minimum of five years inspection equipment required.
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Expertise in operating the following machine shop equipment:
    • CNC Horizontal and Vertical Mill
    • CNC Lathe
    • Swiss Lathe
    • Water jet
    • Drill Press
    • Band saw
    • Table saw
    • Media blasting
    • Pedestal grinder
  • Solid leadership skills with demonstrated knowledge and understanding of staff management practices and processes and the ability to establish accountabilities and expectations and manage performance to achieve results.
  • Expertise in operation of machinery that perform threading, deburring, lapping, polishing, etc.
  • Understand and follow safety precautions and ensure compliance with company safety policies.
  • Ability to interpret basic to complex engineering drawings and requirements.
  • Knowledge of the operation and programming of measurement equipment such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, CNC vision systems, and CMM.
  • Familiar with ISO Standards and Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Strong understanding of material consistencies of plastic and metal parts.
  • Logical problem solving and demonstrated ability to organize and move project tasks forward in an orderly and structured fashion.
  • Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Effectively communicate issues/problems and results that impact schedules, accuracy and reliability of data, and product quality
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • Thorough knowledge of CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks, Esprit and Mastercam).
  • Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected including the ability to multi-task and work productively in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the individual is frequently required to sit and stand for long periods. The individual will occasionally be required to walk; use hands and arms to operate, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. This position requires moving/lifting items up to 50lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is performed in a traditional production environment and/or light-manufacturing facility.

COMPENSATION SUMMARY

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $113,600 to $173,300. This salary range represents a general guideline as MSD considers other factors when presenting an offer of employment, such as scope and responsibilities of the position, external market factors, and the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities, education and experience. Employees may qualify for a discretionary or non-discretionary bonus in addition to their base salary. These annual bonuses are intended to recognize individual performance and enable employees to benefit from the Company's overall success.
