The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible to develop, implement and maintain methods, processes and costs in support of Scot Forge customers and employee owners. The Manufacturing Engineer will work closely with the department supervisors and other Scot Forge departments in an environment that fosters continuous improvement, lean principles and best practices. Recommend and implement improvements or modifications in the sequence of operations, work instructions, equipment utilization and other related subjects to improve safety, quality, process and costs.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Support manufacturing with a disciplined approach to problem solving (including fishbone diagrams, 6s, value stream mapping, job safety analysis, etc.) in program launches, rework and continuous improvement.
- Provide effective leadership by constructively challenging deployed processes, inspiring a shared vision enabling others to act, transparently modeling/leading the way.
- Utilize an understanding of current and potential process capabilities and process control limits to improve quality and to assess incoming work.
- Support and document continuous improvement opportunities to reduce cycle times and reduce scrap and waste.
- Develop financial justifications for capital equipment and process changes.
- Design and carry out time studies, method analysis, and other work measurement activities.
- Demonstrate the use of computer simulations of processes and provide input and recommendations for improvements to the plant regarding production processes.
- Serve as a resource, provide expert technical assistance, and deliver on-the-job training to employee-owners, to ensure all work is performed per specifications in an expeditious, complete, cost effective, and safe manner.
- Meet key performance measures for the assigned process families in the areas of safety, quality, cost, productivity, and timely completion of customer orders.
- Create/update/maintain routings, work instructions and blueprints to meet customer specifications and quality standards in the most cost-efficient manner.
- Work across all three plants/shifts to be able to maintain support for projects/production
Required Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering/technology or related degree or equivalent experience
- Minimum 3 years of related experience in manufacturing and/or metals industry
- Experience in project management, applying industrial engineering methods, and technical applications of manufacturing practices.
- Proficient knowledge of SolidWorks or other CAD/CAM software and Geometrical Tolerance specification/application.
- Highly proficient ability to communicate technical issues to various internal production and business departments and to external vendors and customers.
- Demonstrate expert mathematical and mechanical skills
- Extensive experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, Project and PowerPoint.
- 5+ years of applied experience in an Engineering/Technology position in manufacturing and/or metals industry.
- History of success in improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
- Demonstrate knowledge and experience in quality tools and relevant safety regulations.
- Experience in Value Stream Mapping, Time Standards, Line Balancing, and Plant Floor Layout.
- Training in Lean Manufacturing, Visual Factory, Kanban, Kaizen, and Six-Sigma methods.
- Materials flow management experience.
- Experience with ERP or MRP software
Other Duties as Assigned
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Position requires a mix of working in office and occasionally working in production areas while forklifts, overhead cranes and related equipment are in use. On occasion while performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to heat and cold weather conditions as well as wet and/or humid conditions. When in the area of production, appropriate PPE is mandatory.
