SMT Process Engineer

Our client, an electronic manufacturing provider in the New Haven, CT area, a privately held, state-of-the-art Electronic Manufacturing Services is committed to continuous improvement and the advancement of their equipment, software, and human capabilities, employing the brightest minds and cutting-edge technology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Acquire a basic understanding of company services to effectively support staff in various functions.
  • Program and operate all SMT (Surface-Mount Technology) equipment, including printers, SPI, pick-and-place machines, reflow ovens, and AOI.
  • Create and debug oven reflow profiles to ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and process issues with strong analytical skills.
  • Apply knowledge of IPC and J-STD standards for class 13 manufacturing.
  • Write comprehensive pre- and post-build DFM (Design for Manufacturing) reports.
  • Conduct defect analysis, perform root cause investigations, and implement resolutions.
  • Program and provide technical support for Selective and Wave soldering processes.
  • Interpret and analyze 2D and 5DX x-ray images; programming experience is a plus.
  • Create and program labels, including bar-code systems, for production tracking.
  • Maintain strong organizational skills and demonstrate professionalism at all times.
  • Collaborate with engineers and floor personnel to meet production goals.
  • Interpret assembly and fabrication drawings, ensuring all requirements are met.
  • Partner with customer engineering teams to improve designs and enhance processes.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Associate's, B.A., or B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Strong technical understanding of machinery functions, including mechanical, electrical, and software components.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
  • Experience in stencil design using Gerber files, CAD, and other design tools.
  • Hands-on experience with rework processes, including hot air, BGA repair, wash/PCA cleaning, and soldering.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Demonstrated positive customer service attitude.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Solid technical background in circuit card and box build assemblies.
