This position has a Special Entrance Rate at each level

Corrections Cadet has an SER of$17.50per hour.

Corrections Sergeant has an SER of$18.80 per hour.

Corrections Sergeant-Master has an SER of$20.11per hour.

There is Premium Pay for this position:

A rate between$.50 and $1.00 an hourfor each regular hour worked, based on years of service with DOC, in addition to regular pay.

Position Specific Duties:

+ Six week Correctional Officer Training Academy.

+ Work closely with inmates incarcerated in a State prison facility.

+ Primarily responsible for the custody and security of inmates - in facility buildings, prison dorms, workshops, and/or fields.

+ Supervise housekeeping of inmate housing areas, escort prisoners, investigate suspicious activities, and perform in-depth security searches/shakedowns of inmate's person, property, living quarters and work locations.

+ Supervise inmate work crews, patrol areas of the prison, and transport inmates as assigned.

+ Follow direction given by upper level officers, departmental policies, and regulations.

+ Will receive firearms training.

INCENTIVE PAY: Eligible for additional pay increaseafter becoming permanent, for having an Associate Degree or a Baccalaureate Degree in the following fields: Behavioral Rehabilitation, Behavioral Science, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Forensic Science, Law, Psychology, Social Work, or Sociology from an accredited college, university, or technical college.

Career Progression:

+ Start as aCorrections Cadet. (May start as a Corrections Sergeant with certain qualifying experience.)

+ Eligible for reallocation, up one pay level from Cadet, toCorrections Sergeantafter 6 months of successful employment.

+ Eligible for reallocation, up two pay levels from Sergeant, toCorrections Sergeant-Masterafter one year of successful LA DOC employment.

+ With 2 years of Correctional Officer experience, eligible to apply for promotional testing for Corrections Lieutenant.

SALARY DEPENDENDS ON LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE

+ As part of a Career Progression Group,vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Cadet, Sergeant, or Sergeant-Master depending on the level and/or type of experienceof the selected applicant(s).

+ The maximum salary for the Corrections Sergeant-Master is $70,845.00 annually.

+ This position may be filled as a Temporary Job Appointment. Should a permanent position become available, the employee will be converted to a probationary appointment.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

One year of continuous employment in any field of work will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have attained eighteenth birthday at time of application.

Must have a valid driver's license.

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Corrections Sergeant in that it is an entry level position with primary responsibility in security such as key room, dormitory, control center, field, trip, or gate officer. May act independently or under general supervision.

Trains in classroom and at on-the-job training sites.

Observes security officers engaged in demonstration of security work.

Assists security officers of higher level in work as journeyman security officers such as cellblock, dormitory, trips, gate officer, chase team, or dog trainer.

Oversees inmates for training purposes.

Responds to emergencies and renders assistance as required.
