PGY2 Pharmacy Specialty Residency
Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH) in Miami, Florida is a 1550 bed academic, tertiary hospital associated with the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller Medical School. JMH offers ASHP-accredited one-year PGY-2 pharmacy specialty residencies in Critical Care (CC), Infectious Diseases, Emergency Medicine (EM), Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership, Solid Organ Transplant and Pediatric Pharmacy. These programs provide a wide variety of experiences and serve a diverse patient population. Minimum qualifications for applicants to the PGY2 programs include graduation from an accredited college of pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, completion of an accredited PGY1 residency or equivalent experience and eligibility for licensure in Florida. The pharmacy residency program has over 30 residency rotation preceptors spread throughout pharmacy administration, outpatient clinics and inpatient clinical pharmacists.

Residents will gain expertise through direct patient care in variety of critical care environments, primary literature evaluation and application, participation in educational programs, research and publication opportunities, and student preceptorship. The critical care specialty residency provides the resident with experience and training in the following critical care areas: Medical, surgical, trauma/burn (level I trauma center), cardiac, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosciences, solid organ transplantation, infectious diseases, pediatric, neonatal (level III) and emergency services. The resident will be an integral member of the multi-disciplinary care team and will be skilled at teaching other healthcare professionals about critical care drug therapy. A variety of elective rotations are available. The resident is integrated with comprehensive clinical pharmacy services and is involved in teaching and research activities. A resident who successfully completes this program will be prepared to enter into a clinical specialty position in a health-system or a combination of academia and practice affiliated with a College of Pharmacy. PGY2 INFECTIOUS DISEASES PHARMACY RESIDENCY PROGRAM OVERVIEW The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital is a one year ASHP-accredited program. The ID residency provides a wide variety of experiences in a diverse patient population, including solid organ transplant and oncology. The resident will participate actively with the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) and the multidisciplinary Anti-Infective Subcommittee, both of which have been established for over 20 years. The JMH ID residency is composed of three major elements: development of clinical skills associated with ID pharmacy practice, institution-wide management of antimicrobial stewardship interventions, and advancement in communication and research skills. Through rotations, daily topic discussions, and while on call, the resident will care for patients with complex and unique infectious diseases. The resident will participate in an on call rotation for the ASP, gaining first-hand experience in management and recommendations associated with restricted and/or non-restricted antimicrobials. Upon completion, the ID resident will have had the opportunity to develop skills of a well-rounded, independent Infectious Diseases Specialist. PGY2 HEALTH-SYSTEM PHARMACY ADMINISTRATION AND LEADERSHIP OVERVIEW The residency in Health System Administration and Leadership is a one year ASHP Accredited Program. The resident will focus on areas such as productivity, budgeting, customer service, inventory control, clinical service expansion, practice model assessment, staff development, procurement, and much more. A variety of elective rotations are available to tailor the elective months of the residency to the resident's needs. The resident is integrated with the Jackson Health-System Pharmacy Administration services with exposure to a large academic county facility and retail pharmacy services. The resident is also involved in teaching and research activities. PGY2 SOLID ORGAN TRANSPLANT RESIDENCY OVERVIEW The PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant (SOT) Pharmacy Residency Program at JMH is a one-year ASHP accredited program designed to develop highly qualified clinical transplant pharmacists. The Miami Transplant Institute (MTI), formed as a collaboration between JMH and the University of Miami Health System (UHealth), is South Florida’s largest transplant center, and the only center in the region performing all types of solid organ transplants (kidney, pancreas, liver, intestine, heart, and lung). The JMH SOT residency offers extensive learning opportunities in transplant pharmacy practice – inpatient and outpatient, adult and pediatric populations, covering all six types of solid organ transplant. Additional clinical rotations are available in infectious diseases and critical care. Residents will participate in topic discussions relevant to each rotation, assist with patient medication counseling, present articles in journal clubs, and frequent patient discussions. The resident will gain expertise through direct patient care in a variety of patient care environments; primary literature evaluation and application; participation in educational programs; research and publication opportunities; and preceptorship. The resident is expected to become an integral part of the multidisciplinary team(s) and is expected to participate in the education of other health care professionals. The purpose of the PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy residency is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in the specialized area of pediatric pharmacy. The PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete the program are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification in pediatric pharmacy (Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacy Specialist (BCPPS)).
