Interviews and job offers will take place beginning the week of January 6, 2025. Public Health Services has an opening for Epidemiologist I. The incumbent will be responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating reportable infectious and non-infectious disease and condition programs and surveillance, as well as monitoring, reporting, and controlling activities within the county. The incumbent will be responsible for population health surveillance as well as individual investigation and may be responsible for evaluation of public health programs. here . HIRING TIMELINE AND DATES Job Offer and Background Process begins week of January 6, 2025. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening. Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results. Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date. If you are not selected for this interview process, you may have the opportunity to compete for future vacancies. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A master's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in public health with specialization in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field; OR, A bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, life science or related field, AND, two (2) years of experience in a public health, medical or community services agency, which must have included responsibility for designing instruments for collecting and analyzing epidemiological or demographic data, and interpreting findings pertaining to such data. Note:
A Ph.D. in epidemiology, public health, life science or a closely related field from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency is highly desirable. IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate will have knowledge of epidemiology and statistics and current trends in applied public health. The candidate should have awareness of the techniques of collecting, compiling, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data as well as evaluating public health service programs provided by a large public agency. In addition, the candidate should have strong interpersonal skills and be able to collaborate with County departments/programs as well as with community partners. CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process. EVALUATION PROCESS Qualified applicants will be placed on a
six (6) month
employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in the supplemental questionnaire.
