Team Leader Bioscience Immunology Early Respiratory and Immunology

AstraZeneca, Waltham, Massachusetts, United States, 02254

AstraZeneca is a global biopharmaceutical company that is dedicated to discovering, crafting, and delivering innovative medicines and healthcare solutions that improve the lives of patients. The vision of AstraZeneca Early Respiratory & Immunology (Early R&I) is centered on delivering life-changing products that advance world health and help fight and cure disease. Early R&I is one of three main therapeutic research areas within AstraZeneca that deliver candidate drugs into late-stage clinical development. Here, you’ll have the chance to make a difference in people’s lives every day.

As part of building our Immunology Bioscience team within the Early R&I department, we are seeking a highly motivated senior researcher with a strong understanding of adaptive and/or innate immunity, with experience in the application of molecular and omic approaches to disease biology understanding and drug target identification. The role will be based in Waltham, MA (Boston Biohub) within AstraZeneca’s groundbreaking laboratories where you will follow the science to help drive innovation and advance medicine to help improve patient lives.

In this role, you would be encouraged to demonstrate an especially high level of passion for research leading to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics. Your role will involve demonstrating the use of single-cell genomics data to uncover biological mechanisms in diseased states. This will require close collaboration with our bioinformatics team and conducting data validation in preclinical settings. Ideally, you have expertise in T-, B- and innate immunity and/or pathogenic mechanisms involved in tissue pathology in immune-mediated diseases. The role interprets experiments that deliver testable hypotheses that integrate clinical and biological endpoints using pioneering methods and technologies. Experience in sophisticated co-culture systems and cell imaging, and an ability to apply this experience to an understanding of the basic mechanisms of human immune-mediated disease is preferred.

Accountabilities

Be a biology leader in the Bioscience, Immunology team focusing on developing therapeutics for treatment of Rheumatological and Gastrointestinal Diseases.

Combine bench work with the ability to train junior scientists and drive the direction of the work.

Conduct lab work predominantly with human in vitro systems, working with primary and disease tissue-derived cells.

Focus research on characterizing novel immunological pathways in health and disease to aid target validation and drug projects.

Contribute and drive strategies for new target identification for the treatment of immune-mediated diseases such as rheumatological and gastrointestinal diseases.

Link experimental results to insights generated from proprietary and public omics data sources, including data from our own clinical trials.

Deliver data to validate hypotheses from complex data to inform target selection.

Collaborate with scientists from various functional teams in Waltham and with our sites in Gaithersburg, MD; Cambridge, UK; and Gothenburg, Sweden.

Benefit from daily interaction and collaboration with highly accomplished scientists in a dynamic and innovative environment.

Stay current with emerging trends in immunology, especially applications to drug discovery.

Publish work in high-impact journals.

Essential Skills/Experience

A Ph.D. in Immunology or a closely related field with a minimum of 3-5 years of post-doctoral experience.

Experience working in the pharma/biotech industry is preferred but not crucial.

Experience in drug discovery projects in immunology, fibrotic diseases, or a closely related field of biology is preferred.

Highly organized and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team to conduct high-level research projects.

Strong hands-on skills in basic biochemical and molecular techniques.

Experience with the application of omic technology e.g., single-cell and RNAseq to reveal relevant biological insights.

Experience analyzing immunological datasets associated with oncology and/or autoimmune diseases.

Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to critically analyze data sets.

Proven ability to run collaborative efforts and apply external resources to find the most effective solutions to drug discovery problems.

Ability to record protocols and experiments in a timely manner and maintain an excellent laboratory notebook.
