Summary: This entry-level position in the laboratory research family is responsible for helping basic science and/or clinical (biological) scientists conduct laboratory tests and experiments. Performing basic scientific tests, experiments, and analyses while working under the direction of a Principal Investigator (PI) and more senior lab staff. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures. Required Job Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related science. 6 months of laboratory experience. Familiarity with traditional laboratory instruments and basic knowledge of experimental design. Knowledge of good laboratory practice, lab health and safety principles. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively. Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Responsibilities: Assist in the collection and processing of clinical and preclinical bio specimens, such as blood, food, and bacteria cultures, for laboratory analysis. Set up, maintain, and clean laboratory instruments and equipment, such as microscopes, scales, and test tubes. May prepare common buffers and reagents. May perform immunohistochemical studies using standard methods. May run gene expression assays (PCR & qPCR). May perform proteomic, immunoblotting, and immunoassays when necessary. Maintain inventory for experimental specimens and enter study information including methods and results into computer databases. Maintain and submit primary and summary documentation of laboratory work to the principal investigator or designee. Develop sufficient understanding of the underlying theoretical concepts involved in the testing to ascertain problems in the testing or in the research design and discuss them with the PI. May periodically research or abstract to a limited extent relevant literature about new or known technical procedures or research protocols. Assist research staff to conduct basic laboratory tests and procedures for ongoing research studies. Operate traditional laboratory instruments and automated equipment to conduct experiments. Use computer software to collect and analyze experimental data. Follow good laboratory safety practices and comply with safety protocols. Document work including equipment settings, procedures, and results according to lab protocols. Other duties as assigned. Rush is an equal opportunity employer.
