TITLE: School Nurse
QUALIFICATIONS: Hold current license as a registered, professional nurse in the State of Louisiana Have at least two years of professional experience as a nurse
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services
SUPERVISES: None
JOB GOAL: To insure that all students may fully participate in the educational endeavors of the school system through early screening and treatment of health problems.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Screens children for obvious health problems and handicaps. Tests children for vision/hearing problems and refers, as necessary, to proper agencies for treatment. Sets up medical clinics with assistance of Health Department. Conducts home visits to advise parents in proper care of children with impairments. Coordinates activities between state health and school personnel for delivery of more comprehensive health care services. Serves as resource person to special education classroom and clinics by providing up-to- date health care information. Becomes informed of the special needs of each child by consulting relevant records of the Parish Health Unit. Coordinates and supports public health programs. Serves as the school system's representative during on-campus visits. Serves as liaison between the schools and the Department of Public Welfare to secure optimal services for children with impairments. Writes health reports and maintains health records of children with impairments. Serves as a member of the Evaluation Team as needed. Develops and implements Individual Growth Plan based on the previous year's observation and evaluation recommendations. Completes a self-evaluation annually. Performs other duties as assigned by the proper authority. Promotes harmony between: teachers, students, teacher and student. Accepts and supports administration decisions.
PERSONAL QUALITIES: Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with individuals and groups. Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Possesses the knowledge to gather data, compile information and prepare reports.
PROFESSIONAL ETHICS (Does not require IAPs. The deficiency in professional responsibilities shall be addressed with a progression of documentation): The nurse collaborates and communicates effectively and respectfully with colleagues and the community to promote growth and to accomplish the district's mission. The nurse maintains regular attendance and punctuality and notifies appropriate personnel of absences and late arrivals in a prompt manner, as per district procedures. The nurse complies with all district rules and policies. The nurse ensures proper care of supplies, electronics/computers and other equipment. The nurse maintains his/her assigned area and its environment in a manner conducive to a professional working environment. The nurse participates in activities to improve professional competence, including those activities required by the board. The nurse oversees the maintenance of current records and reports as assigned. The nurse projects a well-groomed, professional appearance. The nurse accepts and implements assistance and resources designed to improve or enhance performance. The nurse contributes to achieving the district's mission, engages in self-reflection and growth opportunities, and creates and sustains partnerships with colleagues and communities. The nurse engages in self-reflection and growth opportunities to support high levels of learning for all staff and students. The nurse is courteous to faculty, staff and the public. The nurse recognizes and respects the rights and property of other employees and the public. The nurse exhibits professional and ethical conduct. The nurse exercises proper judgment and refrains from conduct which reduces or causes a loss of his/her effectiveness in the profession. The nurse adheres to all deadlines set by board policy.
