Job Description

General Function:

Responsible for overseeing the assistive technology program, ensuring that students receive assistive technology-based accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Coordinates alternate text conversion requests, providing direction to student workers, and providing training to students on utilizing assistive technology equipment and software. Assists in ensuring that ADS is up to date with current trends and advances in assistive technology. Works collaboratively with others to promote a more digitally accessible environment at Harper College.

Responsibilities

Characteristic Duties:

Coordinates students' alternative text conversion and equipment loan requests, ensuring the requests are fulfilled in a timely manner. Provides day to day direction and training for Assistive Technology Lab student workers.

Ensures requests and equipment are properly recorded and tracked through Accessible Information Management (AIM) software.

Works with the Manager of Accommodations to ensure that ADS continues to have the capacity to produce materials into Braille, large print, and digital formats for the students.

Collaborates with the Digital Accessibility Manager, Digital Accessibility Faculty Coordinator, and the Academy for Teaching Excellence to identify digital accessibility gaps on campus and develop digital accessibility resources.

Provides assistive technology and digital accessibility reports as needed. Creates, fosters and maintains collaborative working relationships with staff and faculty to promote awareness and use of assistive technology as accommodation and instructional tools.

Trains students in the use of various applications such as text-to-speech, print magnification, voice-to-text, Braille print, etc.

Maintains professional competence in disability accessibility laws, and regulations to guide development and revision of policy and procedure for the campus community.

Gives recommendations for assistive technology acquisitions based on the trends and research.

Attends required meetings and serves on college committees as appropriate

Demonstrates multicultural competence (including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations) and promote an educational and work environment that affirms a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager of ADS.

Supervision:

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Access and Disability Services.

Provides direction to student workers.

Equipment/Tools Used:

Utilizes standard and specialized office equipment in order to perform the duties of the job.

Qualifications

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in Assistive Technology, Instructional Technology, Computer Science, Disability Services, Rehabilitation Counseling, or related field preferred. Associate degree required.

Knowledge and application of WCAG 2.1 AA standards.

Extensive knowledge of assistive technology products, including Dragon Naturally Speaking, Zoom Text, Jaws, and Braille Embosser.

Experience:

A minimum two years of experience in working directly with computer-based

assistive technology programs and assistive devices. Ability to multitask and prioritize requests. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an emphasis on supporting students with disabilities. Demonstrated experience in solving complex problems.
