With our research insights, we facilitate discourse across the financial ecosystem to inform public policy and market practices.Our core values are rigor, independence, actionability, transparency, inclusion, and curiosity.FinRegLab (FRL) is seeking a Senior Data Scientist with a desire to work in both domestic and international jurisdictions leading key research projects. This person's first role will be to lead the credit risk analytics work on a research project in which the insights will powerfully inform how credit can be economically provided to women micro and small business entrepreneurs in Kenya. The person will work with credit bureau and alternative data sources to build risk predictive insights by data source. This person will also work with research analysts to determine how data might be digitally ingested with acceptable economics. Certain components of the project will be conducted in-country (Kenya). The project will require multiple trips to Kenya over a two-year period, including some that may last up to four weeks at a time.We are seeking to fill a permanent position but are open to shorter contractual arrangements to start that can lead to a permanent position.Core ResponsibilitiesDemonstrated experience with credit-related analytic methods, including artificial intelligence/machine learning, and familiarity with developing and validating credit risk models within regulatory frameworks including fair lending and model risk management guidance.An inquisitive and curious nature that seeks to rigorously and empirically explore consumer financial behaviors using data and analytics.A desire to work with detailed analytics while also guiding the overall project, including resource, timeline and budget management, reporting and communications.Strong capacity to communicate complex analytic insights to diverse audiences such as data scientists, lenders and regulators.Desire to work across multiple domestic and international jurisdictions.QualificationsUnderstanding of and passion for the organization’s mission, vision, and values.Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree required in Data Science, Operations Research or Statistics. PhD optional.7+ years experience in technical credit risk modeling. Competencies in logistic regression, XGBoost, Python, R.Familiarity with the use of new technologies and data in the financial sector serving consumers and small businesses, for instance through prior project leadership, model building responsibilities, research, or other relevant professional experience.Experience managing and executing research and analytical projects.Excellent written language and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft white papers and present research findings in a clear and compelling way by tailoring presentation style and content to the needs of the audience.Ability to produce analysis and insights across a range of research projects and using basic data and statistical software.Robust problem-solving skills.High standards and disciplined about meeting commitments and delivering high quality results within agreed timeframes.The ability to rapidly understand stakeholder needs, and deliver effective outcomes.Excellent attention to detail, pride in work, and ensuring it is of the highest standard.Tenacious, will-do perspective and attitude.Genuine enthusiasm for learning and contributing to a world-class research organization.Locations, Salary, BenefitsThis position is preferably based in the Washington, D.C. metro area and in line with our work hours and location guidelines for hybrid work, the person will come into the office a minimum of 2 days a week. Compensation will be commensurate with the overall experience level of successful applicants.
