JOB SUMMARY:

The role of this position is to oversee the day to day functions of the County virtualization, network, backup, and phone/VOIP infrastructures to ensure smooth technology operations and business continuity.

This position is fast-paced and work-steady.

It requires a clear understanding of, and support for, the overall County mission and how each department’s functions help fulfill that mission.

In this role, the need for someone who is organized and analytical while maintaining a strong sense of creativity is a must.

The Infrastructure Engineer must possess a strong understanding of networking, firewall administration, virtualization and storage technology, as they will serve as the primary network administrator for the organization.

This also requires a thorough understanding of the underlying concepts used therein, i.e. TCP/IP, iSCSI, RAID, I/O, etc.

This position will regularly require the candidate to perform troubleshooting procedures while always searching for, and looking to address, root-cause problems.

This position will be responsible for collaboratively architecting long-term technology solutions while always keeping abreast of current security and compliance best-practices.

This position does not exercise any supervisory authority.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The following duties are normal for this position.

Other duties may be required and assigned.Administer and support the operation of the County’s firewall and switch infrastructure.Administer and support the operation of the County’s various virtualization platformsDevelop, deploy, monitor, and maintain backup schedules and disaster recovery programsAdminister core domain services such as Microsoft Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, RADIUS, and PKIEnsure that all supported environments are monitored to provide effective alertingEnsure that all supported environments are fully documented, including procedures for their use and managementWork with vendors to resolve issues and to work on new technologies and proposalsAdminister the County’s VOIP infrastructure to ensure excellent continuity of voice communications across the organizationIdentify and remedy network performance bottlenecks.Monitor and analyze network performance across the organization’s LANs, WANs, and wireless deployments.Install and configure all network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches, etc.Ensure network and IP connectivity of all workstations, application servers, and back-end office infrastructure.Implement technology solutions in compliance with CJIS and other regulatory compliance policiesEnsure the deployment of these technologies aligns with current security best-practicesInspect, maintain, and where necessary replace network cabling, voice/data jacks, and other network-related equipment.Participate in project planning and ensure timely project executionMentor other staff to ensure effective knowledge transfer of key areas of operational expertiseParticipate in on-call rotationOther duties as assigned

Strategy & Planning

Assist other IT Department staff in determining long-term solutions to technology issues across the CountyParticipate in the evaluation, deployment, and management of new technologiesAssist in the development of technology project plansAssess implementation strategies and recommend ways to minimize the impact those strategies will have on business operations

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE:Bachelor’s degree in relevant field preferred; Relevant industry certifications preferred

This position reports to the Information Technology Operations Manager

WORK LOCATION AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions (such as in a typical office).

Potential for occasional off-hours work should be expected.

Occasional heavy lifting of 50 lbs.

This position is in the Van Buren County Information Technology Department housed in the County Administration Building, Paw Paw, MI. Other sites throughout the County are supported as well
