Job Overview
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a member of the executive leadership team and has overall responsibility for the finances and financial strategy of CWD Real Estate and its affiliate organizations.
Working with leadership, the CFO is responsible for developing and implementing the financial plan for the company. Working with the team, the CFO will take a leadership role in strategic planning for the company, and the development of operating systems to monitor KPIs that maximize investment value of the company's real estate investments. The CFO is tasked with managing and reporting on all fiscal and fiduciary affairs of the Organization, including reporting to investors, lenders, grantors, and government agencies; cash and investment management; budgeting and forecasting; and managing the day-to-day operations of the accounting department.
The CFO collaborates with the Managing Partner’s (MP’s) and other leaders to develop and implement the organization's business plan to meet its strategic goals. The CFO recommends the financial strategy for reaching the organization's goals, monitors and analyzes financial results, and identifies risks to the organization and mitigation strategies.
Responsibilities
Organizational Strategy and Results:
Together with the MP’s, VP of Operations, and other executive leadership team, develops the strategic plan to ensure that the Organization can meet the return targets of its investments and that each related entity has the financial resources needed to achieve its current and future goals, while mitigating financial and operational risk.
Lead the Company in reviewing investment and operational performance (at least on a quarterly basis) and holding accountable all members for the strategic plan as implemented.
Develops and maintains effective working relationships with key financial partners including investors, partners, lenders, and vendors.
Builds and maintains a strategic network within the business and civic communities in which CWD operates.
Stays on top of innovative industry trends and information systems technology that impact investments and regularly reports to MP’s.
Serve as a key advisor to the board of directors and the audit/finance committees.
Finance:
Leadership role in Investor relations and oversight of reporting to investors, including the development and maintenance of a comprehensive information systems plan.
Financial modeling and projections for current real estate projects, proposed purchases and proposed developments and property sales.
Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed.
Oversee cash and investment management.
Assist the Managing Partners in developing financing strategies as well as sourcing, negotiating and securing financing (debt or equity).
Identify opportunities to improve financial performance of Company and managed assets.
Monitor loan covenant compliance and complete required reporting information during the term of the financing.
Coordinate asset management with VP of Operations.
Real Estate Development and Asset Management:
Works collaboratively with MP’s to review potential acquisitions, debt, equity and public partnership proposals and partnership/operating agreements.
Reviews key legal agreements, including mortgages, loan documents, subordination agreement and guarantees as part of a financing and construction loan closing and contracts, and/or private debt.
Works closely with the Controller and Director of Development to prepare and issue funding construction requisitions for all real estate development projects in construction.
In conjunction with the real estate development staff and auditors, ensure that equity draws, project cost reports and other specialized reporting to investors and government agencies are completed accurately and timely.
Financial Reporting and Accounting Administration:
Oversee the accounting team to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and functions.
Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for clients, investors, partners, lenders, and governmental agencies.
Coordinate any necessary audits and proper filing of tax returns.
Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.
Develop and oversee job costing process for development cycle.
Risk Management:
Regularly review potential risks to Company and work with service providers and team members to implement mitigation strategies.
Ensure that the Company has obtained and is current with appropriate levels and types of insurance.
Encourage implementation of Company policies that will lead to reduction in risk.
Tax Matters:
Lead needed research to provide tax guidance in proposed real estate transactions.
Tax compliance is addressed in the reporting section above.
Review and final approval of tax returns as prepared.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
Advanced degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
7 to 10 years' experience. Experienced leader in budget management and cash and investment strategies. Leadership skills that can manage at all levels of the organization.
Strong background in financial accounting and financial management.
Proven experience in financial planning, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance.
Expertise in GAAP and technical accounting.
High level of integrity and accountability. Ability to lead in a complex environment that encourages results.
Strong financial acumen and the ability to interpret financial reports.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
