Position Information

Under general supervision performs responsible professional social work for troubled, abused, and/or neglected youth in the Betty Jo McNeece Receiving Home (BJMRH); provides advanced and specialized support for the shelter; provides casework services of a general tangible nature; and performs other related work as assigned.

Social Worker I-BJMRH

Working under close supervision, Social Worker I is the entry/trainee class in the professional Social Worker series. Employees in this class carry a limited non-complex caseload. Workers in this classification possess the general skills necessary for the care and counseling of children at the shelter. As requisite skill and knowledge are developed, greater independence and the full scope of responsibility are exercised. Unless a position is permanently allocated to the Social Worker I level due to the nature of the work, employees are expected to promote to the Social Worker II after one year of satisfactory performance at the trainee level.

Social Worker II-BJMRH

Working under general direction, Social Worker II is the journey level in the Social Worker series. Employees at this level will perform regular care and child supervision duties and handle more difficult care, assessment, and interventions with children experiencing behavior or emotional difficulties. Employees work with a high degree of independence in administering services and in using agency or community resources. Social Worker II is differs from Social Worker III in that the latter is the advanced journey level, assigned the more complex cases, specialized functions.. The Social Worker series differs from the Employment & Training Worker series in that the latter provides employability services to eligible applicants of social services agencies; and differs from the Eligibility Worker series in that the latter is responsible for determination of financial eligibility for public assistance programs.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:For Social Worker I, duties are performed at the entry level.Carries a caseload that includes cases with problems of moderate difficulty.Identifies behaviors and special needs of dependent children; develops profiles of children's needsCollaborates with the Child Welfare social Worker to discuss case history and to ensure appropriate placements for children's transfers to foster homes or families.Interviews children and performs case studies to determine social service needs.Develops and carries out non-complex treatment plans for an assigned caseload.Assists applicants and recipients in utilizing available resources.Interprets policies, rules, and regulations of the agency to applicants, clients and others within the scope of their responsibility.May perform daily housekeeping chores, such as cleaning bathroom, vacuuming, mopping, and dusting; change bed linens for smaller children and supervise older children in the making of their beds.May assist with children's personal hygiene, including bathing, showering, dressing, mending, diapering and toilet trainingMay provide transportation for children to appointments, satellite homes, and interviews; lists, and tracks authorized persons for visitations with children; coordinates visits with children; obtains needed authorization for medical treatment.Prepares, updates, and maintains a variety of forms, files, charts, logs, passports, case, school and medical records related to children's intakeParticipates in planning and coordinating parties, picnics, and other events/activities for children; obtains items to meet children's special needs.May be assigned to specialized functions.Participates in in-service training and other staff development activities to increase knowledge of the social work processes and achieve technical competence.Receives casework consultation from professionally trained staff members.Conducts resource meetings and presents training to new staffProvides community outreach for various agency programs.Performs related duties as assigned.Note: The level and scope of the knowledge and skills listed below are related to job duties as distinguished between the two levels in the Definition section.

Social Worker I:

Pattern 1:

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university;

OR

Pattern 2:

Successful completion of thirty (30) college semester units from an accredited college or university, including fifteen (15) units in social welfare, social/human services, sociology, or other social or behavioral science:*

AND

One (1) year of full-time experience comparable to the Social Service Aide, Eligibility

Worker II, or Employment and Training Worker II classification;

OR

Three (3) years of full-time experience comparable to the Vocational Assistant or

Homemaker classification;

OR

Three (3) years of full-time experience interacting with children or adults providing direct services in a private or public agency.

Social Worker II:

Pattern 1:

One (1) year of full-time experience performing entry level social work case management comparable to the Social Worker I classification in an Interagency Merit System (IMS) county;

OR

Pattern 2:

One (1) year of full-time social work case management experience**

AND

thirty (30) college semester units from an accredited college or university, including fifteen (15) units in social welfare, social/human services, sociology, or other social or behavioral science.*

* Examples of acceptable social or behavioral science courses include: anthropology, criminal justice, education, ethnic studies, history, human development, human services, law, nursing, nutrition, psychology, public health, social welfare, sociology, welfare, women's studies.** Qualifying social work case management includes direct case work management, such as:

assessment, evaluation.

EXAMINATION INFORMATION

QUALIFICATIONS APPRAISAL PANEL - WEIGHTED 100%

The Qualifications Appraisal Panel examination will consist of an oral interview either virtually or in person. In order to obtain a position on the eligible list, a minimum rating of 70% must be attained.

It is anticipated that the examination will be held during October 2024. Competitors who do not appear for the examination will be disqualified.

ELIGIBLE LIST INFORMATIONA departmental open eligible list will be established for the county of Imperial. The list will be utilized for 12 months after it is established unless the needs of the service and conditions of the list warrant a change in this period.

RETEST PERIOD

Once you have taken the examination, you may not retest for SIX (6) MONTHS from the established eligibility date.

SPECIAL TESTING ARRANGEMENTSSpecial testing arrangements may be made to accommodate applicants for disability, military, or religious reasons. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and employees may also be required to drive their own car, provide proof of car insurance.
