Job Summary:

The Lactation Consultant PRN is responsible for the delivery of quality patient care through the process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation with a focus on education. This position participates as an essential member of the healthcare team providing education, support, and lactation therapy for the breastfeeding of inpatient and/or outpatient mothers.Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities:Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to optimize the numbers of breastfeeding and breast milk- feeding infants and provides education for staff on protocols, care plans, and general breastfeeding information and updates.Develops and implements standards of care and guidelines for assisting breastfeeding mothers in all areas of the District where breastfeeding mothers might be served (Emergency Department, OB-GYN inpatient unit, Family Health Centers, Employee Health Clinic, Women's Health, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, etc.).Provides and coordinates patient care, educates patients and public about various health conditions, and provides advice and emotional support to patients and family members.Maintains accurate, detailed reports and records and directs care with regard to age and developmental stage, presenting complaint, and pertinent history.Modifies patient treatment plans as indicated by patients' responses. Monitors, records, and reports symptoms and changes in patients' conditions. Documents teaching and consultation and response in the medical record. Reports findings to appropriate staff.Plans, oversees and coordinates patient family and staff breastfeeding activities.Participates in community activities which support, educate and promote the benefits of breastfeeding.Participates in quality improvement and research processes which result in the improvement of clinical interventions.Assesses infant's readiness to breastfeeding/breast milk feeding.Provides education to parents who are interested in breastfeeding/breast milk feeding to include bedside consultation, classes, reading materials, or other methods identified as needed. Provides education for prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding mothers and assists with the education of District employees on the subject of lactation support.Participates in discharge teaching instructions related to breastfeeding/breast milk feeding.Provides telephone counseling to breastfeeding/breast milk feeding mother's in the community.Responsible for supporting the Performance Improvement process and involvement within the department. Includes evaluation and improvement in the areas of outcomes, access, education, satisfaction, and costs.Serves as a resource person for physicians, Clinical Nurse Managers, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, nurses & other healthcare providers in order to promote optimal care.Maintain required Continuing Education Recognition Points (CERPS) towards recertification.Job description is not an all-inclusive list of duties and may be subject to change with or without notice. Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.3 plus years of experience in peer counseling working in a healthcare setting.

OR

3 plus years of experience providing professional breastfeeding support.ANDCurrent International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)Current JPS-recognized CPR certification and must be maintained throughout employment.Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 90 days of hire.Completion of department-specific competency-based orientation program within 90 days of hire.Preferred Qualifications:
