GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Office of Global Services (OGS) at Illinois Tech provides leadership and support for the Illinois Institute of Technology's efforts to internationalize its campus. At IIT, international students and scholars from around the world are part of our community, and this position supports internalization efforts by serving as a resource to students, scholars, faculty, and campus partners in meeting the needs of the international community through immigration services.

The International Student & Scholar Advisor provides support and assistance to Illinois Tech's international population, through OGS. This position is responsible for advising international students on F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations and cultural adjustment and will serve as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer for the F-1 and J-1 programs in compliance with Federal regulations. This position will assist with SEVIS operations, document and application processing and support general office needs. The advising staff regularly interprets regulations and university policy and draws conclusions after various possibilities are considered. Advisors recommend and implement policy based on through analysis of immigration regulations, government guidance and best practices.

COMMUNICATIONS

In coordination with Management team- Respond to University or U.S. Government requests for data validation. 2) Review regular OGS targeted electronic communications with international students and scholars, and University divisions about programs and events. 3) Develop and deliver presentations to clientele in public forums. 4) Maintain standard protocols in working with confidential documents and sensitive data.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Provides customer service to internal and external customers (all listed above in Communication). Relationship and customer service is extremely important when dealing with the IIT community, especially international students.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Bachelor's Degree in related field required. Two years (2) of relevant work experience in a higher education environment required, preferably with the international student population.

US Citizenship or Permanent Residence required to access SEVIS.

Knowledge & Skills

Special skills and knowledge: Strongly preferred: experience with international student and scholar populations and regulations, including understanding of SEVIS, F, J, and H status requirements.

Very strong preference for experience with Elluician products such as Banner. Prior experience using and working with Terra Dotta is highly desired.

Expertise in use of MS Office applications, especially, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Experience in use of university student and personnel information systems. Familiarity with FERPA regulations;. Strong interpersonal, collaborative, organizational, analytical, and oral/written communication skills. Ability to multitask, work independently, and manage complex projects.

SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY

May supervise front desk student workers in a limited capacity.

Work will mostly be performed in an office setting.

Advising Services: Advise F-1 students and J-1 students/scholars on immigration regulations, cultural adjustment, academic and English language difficulties, financial concerns and general orientation to life in the U.S. Participate in weekly advisor meetings. Provide consistent and correct information to incoming, current and students who graduate from Illinois Tech on matters related to their immigration status. Keep ahead of current issues affecting student population . Oversee & Process student documents including but not limited to: Program Extension, Curricular Practical Trainings (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), STEM OPT Extension, Transfer Out, Academic Training, Workflow and much more.

Key Responsibility

Regulatory Compliance:Act as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). Monitor international student and/or scholar compliance with government regulations. Evaluate university policy and ensure compliance with immigration regulations. Remain current with SEVIS related and regulatory updates pertaining to international students and scholars to ensure institutional compliance. Assist management team in compliance reporting including: SEVIS Registration, address and employment updates and maintenance of status
