The Mental Health Awareness Trainer – Peer (MHAT - Peer) will spend half of their time preparing for and facilitating Mental Health Awareness Trainings as well as accurately maintaining documentation of the same. In addition, the MHAT - Peer will engage in community outreach activities to create additional opportunities to deliver MHAT. The other half of their time will be spent engaging clients in The Point Drop-In Center programming, including individual and group activities designed to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and substance use disorders. This engagement shall be intentional, the purpose being to provide individual and group pro-social skill building with an emphasis on Evidence Based Practices. The qualified candidate will be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and have experience facilitating group educational activities. In addition, they must have the ability to properly document services provided using agency electronic client record documentation system.

The MHAT - Peer will exemplify hope, offering support and advocacy with professionalism while providing a model of recovery for our target population. They will provide client-centered, strength-based, and trauma-informed care to clients with severe mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders utilizing a harm reduction approach. With a strong emphasis on self-determination and dignity of risk, the MHAT - Peer will learn to use motivational interviewing techniques to positively impact our client’s outcome.

Essential Responsibilities

Duties will include but are not limited to:

Facilitating Mental Health Awareness Trainings throughout the Chicagoland area and maintaining accurate documentation of attendance and participation.

Participating in community outreach activities to obtain opportunities for facilitation of MHATs.

Providing engagement services to Drop-In Center clients using person-centered, trauma-informed, and evidence-based practices while properly documenting services delivered.

Assisting the Drop-In Center Team Leader with basic operations such as stocking inventory, managing supplies, maintaining a clean and hygienic area, and coordinating assistance with other Trilogy staff and outside providers to improve Drop-In operations.

Consulting and partnering with staff from other departments for coordination of client care.

Self-identifying as a past or present consumer of mental health and/or substance abuse treatment services and willing to share their personal story of recovery with clients to build rapport, establish trust and assist them in their own recovery journey.

Ensuring the completion of routine safety drills in accordance with organization policies, procedures, and COVID-19 guidelines.

Performing other related duties and/or projects as assigned.

Shift Requirements may include weekend hours dependent upon MHAT facilitation schedule as well as Drop-In Center needs.

Qualifications

The MHAT - Peer will exemplify hope, offering support and advocacy with professionalism while providing a model of recovery for our target population. The successful candidate must:

Self-identify as a past or present consumer of mental health and/or substance abuse

services and be willing to share this with our clients to help facilitate their recovery.

Have a desire to be supportive of people with mental health and substance use challenges.

Have a High School Diploma, GED or its equivalent.

Have a desire to be supportive of people with mental health and substance use challenges.

Be flexible and adaptable to a variety of situations, including practicing appropriate crisis de-escalation techniques.

Be willing to obtain their Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) credential within 18 months of hire.
