The Office of Institutional Advancement at Philander Smith University seeks a strategic and innovative Director of Marketing and Communications. This key leadership position is responsible for developing and executing integrated marketing and communication strategies that support the university's mission, enhance its brand, and engage diverse audiences, including prospective students, alumni, donors, and community partners. The Director will report to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and work collaboratively with various departments to drive effective communication and outreach efforts. This position will play a key role in shaping Philander Smith University's narrative and strengthening its connection with alumni, donors, students, and the community.SUMMARY of POSITION:This position will report to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and be responsible for the following:Strategic Planning: Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that aligns with the university's goals and enhances its visibility and reputation.Brand Management: Oversee the university's brand identity and ensure consistent messaging across all platforms, including digital, print, and social media. Update and enforce brand guidelines.Media Relations: Establish and maintain relationships with media outlets, manage press inquiries, and serve as a university spokesperson. Monitor media coverage and prepare media briefings as needed.Team Leadership: Manage and mentor the marketing and communications team, fostering a culture of collaboration, creativity, and professional growth.Campaign Management: Plan and execute marketing campaigns to promote university programs, events, and initiatives, utilizing data-driven insights to target audiences effectively.Internal Communications: Develop and implement strategies for effective internal communication among faculty, staff, and students to ensure alignment and engagement with the university's mission and initiatives.Performance Analysis: Regularly assess the effectiveness of marketing and communications efforts through analytics and performance metrics and adjust strategies as needed for continuous improvement.RESPONSIBILITIES:At least 5 years experience in journalism, public relations, marketing, or social media management.Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills; proficiency in digital marketing tools, social media platforms, and analytics software; proven experience in media relations and crisis communications. Ability to analyze data and use insights to inform strategy and measure effectiveness.Creative and innovative thinker passionate about higher education and community engagement. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with various stakeholders. Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and project management abilities.Strong leadership abilities with experience in team management and project coordination.
