As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work. You won’t just be sitting in meetings and shadowing all summer; you’ll be actively contributing and doing the same work as other FirstEnergy employees on your team. You’ll receive on-the-job training and challenging assignments. You will also be assigned a Supervisor, a Coach/Mentor and a dedicated IT Intern Program Coordinator to help you maximize your learning and growth throughout your summer… and beyond. Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time, paid opportunities spanning 14 weeks. You must be actively enrolled in an accredited university or college.
The Information Technology organization at FirstEnergy creates and maintains software solutions, operates FirstEnergy data centers, service desks, voice/data networks and a private wide area network that interconnects all major substations and facilities across five states
This position’s base reporting location will be Akron, OH. The position can be worked primarily remotely with occasional work on-site.
About IT WAN/LAN Network Engineering Intern
Network Transport Interns in the Network Engineering & Operations department will work closely with FirstEnergy’s network teams and business units to deliver data networking, transport, and communications solutions for business and operational purposes.
The
Data LAN
team, is responsible for the architecture, engineering, design, implementation, operation, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and ongoing reliability of Local Area Network (LAN) systems. This includes network routing & switching, wireless LAN (802.11x) networks, data center networks (Arista, Nexus, PODs, etc.), and voice & video services (VoIP, voice mail, voice recorders, phones, IVR, video, and satellite).
The
Transport WAN
team is a multidisciplinary technical team responsible for operation, design, engineering, and implementation of reliable 24x7 mission critical communications across more than 2,700 devices interconnected by 10,000 miles of company owned fiber and 3,500 miles of wireless microwave backhaul.
Examples of possible job duties and responsibilities of an IT WAN/LAN Network Engineering Intern:
Providing daily support for the Data Network team that supports the many technology platforms delivering data, voice, video, and computing services to FE employees, contractors, and business partners.
Ensuring high level of reliability and availability of these systems. Manages the expectations of FE business units. Responsible along with others for disaster recovery of these systems.
Understanding and following all applicable policies & procedures to effectively manage risk to FE’s Data Network environments.
Engineering, implementation, and continued support of new systems and services for MPLS, DWDM, and microwave systems
Deliver successful project execution including schedule and budget for assigned initiatives
Effective collaboration with FirstEnergy’s Fiber Team, field technicians, vendors, and support contractors
Delivery of high-performance and high-availability communications in a 24x7 enterprise to achieve service performance expectations with appropriate redundancies for diverse communications
Confirming that all procedures are followed properly (e.g. change management, testing, documentation, etc.)
Applicant Requirements:
Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on
Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, Information Sciences & Technology or other technology related disciplines

Rising Junior
or
Rising Sophomore
Maintain a minimum cumulative
GPA of 2.5
.
Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)
Preferred Skills/Experience
Hands on experience with IT Infrastructure including network routing & switching hardware and systems
Network design, engineering, and drawing management tools
Transport technologies such as MPLS, DWDM, microwave
TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Internet, firewalls, security, and Internet tools
Environmental support systems for the technology platforms (e.g., HVAC, AC/DC power systems, batteries, generators, etc.)
Project management concepts and tools
Familiarity with fiber (single-mode, multi-mode, ADSS, OPGW)
Ideal Candidate

Highly motivated to work independently, utilizing virtual technologies, and learn quickly
Strong ownership of assignments
Must be organized and work well with constant priority changes
Willingness to undertake assignments involving unfamiliar subjects
