Phlebotomists also facilitate the collection and transportation of other laboratory specimens (e.g. urine). Very often the patient's only contact with the medical laboratory is the phlebotomist. Many patients, from children and teens to adults, often find needles and the idea of having their blood drawn frightening. It takes a skilled Phlebotomist to put the patient at ease while obtaining all the required specimens.A caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 4:00AM - 12:30PM. A caregiver who excels in this role will:Collect blood, process specimens and perform reference laboratory processing in laboratory testing.Perform related techniques, such as blood glucose tests and blood cultures.Prepare samples for testing and manage specimens in the laboratory information system.Prepare and ship reference laboratory specimens and resolve pending specimens and pending transports.Monitor test ordering patients and requisitions to ensure compliance with outpatient laboratory testing.Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:High school diploma or GED.Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).Proficiency in blood collection from patients of all age groups.Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:One year of college or equivalent.Six months of experience in phlebotomy and laboratory processing.Our caregivers continue to create the best outcomes for our patients across each of our facilities.
