School/Department InformationWithin the Division of Student Affairs, the area of Residence Life oversees residential spaces that house approximately 626 residential college and 200+ high school students. The Residence Life team cooperates with the campus at large to create a community environment conducive to personal and professional growth unique to high school students in a residential arts conservatory educational setting.

Residence Life staff working with UNCSA's residential college population serve as "live-on" educators, administrators, resource persons, and advisors. These staff advocate for the enrichment of college student artists' experiences by promoting self-awareness, providing healthy social opportunities, identifying resources for success, and presenting educational programs focused on developing lifelong skills.

Primary Description of WorkPositions whose primary purpose is to develop, direct and administer services for students and/or faculty that have a direct impact on the students' educational experiences and/or campus life (e.g., student career services; student life / student housing; student honors programs; student diversity support programs; student conduct; student registration and records). This category also includes student admissions and financial aid positions that exercise decision making authority on behalf of the institution (e.g., admissions officers, financial aid officers) and professional staff who design and deliver programs and instruction that involve direct interaction with students and enhance their academic and learning experiences outside the classroom setting.

Description of Responsibilities and DutiesIn keeping with the primary purpose of this position, the Assistant Director of Student Development is focused on developing students through diversity education and performs the following duties:

Administrative* Assist in operating the Residence Life (college) office by advertising office hours and availability.* Maintain a high level of student contact, availability and visibility by spending time in the college residential area and remaining available to students for informal interactions, administrative services, formal mediation/conflict resolution, problem solving, advising, role modeling, etc.* Assist in the general administration of the office by creating and implementing new procedures that will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of office operations.* Serve nightly and weekend emergency on-called duty coverage on a rotation with other Residence Life professional staff.* Promote the goals of Student Affairs by serving, as appointed, on campus and division-wide committees and reporting details of those committee meetings during weekly Residence Life staff meetings.* Attend all required departmental meetings, in-service trainings, staff development opportunities, and Student Affairs All-Staff meetings.* Attend bi-monthly one-on-one meetings with the Associate Director for Residence Life.* Assist with the coordination of various departmental recognitions including end of the year banquet, paraprofessional appreciation week, other departmental socials throughout the year.* Directly manage and monitor area budgets.* Provide general support for the high school area of Residence Life.* Assist with High School Connector Desk coverage, as needed. Assist as needed with opening and closing of high school residential area.* Merge on-call structure with high school residents live team for duty on break (Winter).* Assist the Associate Director of Residence Life in developing long range goals and objectives for residence life.* Assist in the overall operation of the Residence Life program; generate, sponsor, and supervise new projects, programs, and ideas.* Serve as a summer session area coordinator working closely with the Associate Director for Residence Life and other departmental staff preparing and carrying out summer programs.* Promote the professional development of yourself and other staff members by attending and presenting at student development and housing conferences, taking classes or attending other educational opportunities, and arranging and participating in professional development programs on campus.* Maintain standards of conduct and best practices consistent with the ACPA ethical guidelines and NASPA professional guidelines.* Oversee residential curriculum assessment tools, creating templates in communicating results of all assessments.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT* Provide staff leadership, coordination, and general supervision of programs in the Residence Life college area.* Plan and implement programming for the residential area.* As a resource for residence hall programming.* Participate in planned activities in support initiatives planned by the RAs.* Encourage wellness opportunities and community development through various college and schoolwide programs and activities.* Collaborate on programming and initiatives with Residence Life staff in the high school area.* Encourage peer involvement among students in promoting compliance with school policies and creation of a safe and healthy community.* Consult students for their input regarding hall operations, programs, rules, and facilities

SUPERVISION* Support, and provide input for, the recruitment, selection, training and continued development of the Resident Assistant (RA) staff through spring and fall trainings, on-going staff development opportunities, and other enrichment activities.* Share supervision of the RA student staff team, including ongoing training, support, regular one-on-one meetings, and evaluations.* Plan and conduct weekly RA staff meetings for the purpose of providing input, support, accountability, dissemination of information, training, and evaluation of performance.* Conduct performance evaluations of student staff at least twice during the academic year.* Create avenues for constant written communication with the staff (i.e. email correspondence, newsletters, duty schedules, etc.)

STUDENT CONDUCT* Interpret and enforce all university policies and regulations.* Serve as adjudicator of student conduct, administer residence hall policies, consult with students.* Serve as a conduct hearing officer, maintain disciplinary records, and make judicial referrals consistent with the policies and procedures of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and state of North Carolina.* Hear high school conduct cases as assigned.* Assist the Director of Student Conduct in elevating and educating students on university policies and procedures .* Maintain an educational and proactive approach to discipline.

FACILITIES* Serve as building/area manager. Assume responsibility for monitoring the condition of facilities.* Conduct and supervise operational functions such as scheduling lounge use, reporting/ investigating damages, check-in and check-out of residents, inspect the buildings for the opening/closing of residence halls by completing regular facilities walkthroughs to become aware of developing or potential problems.* Coordinate and supervise all openings and closings of the college area including fall term opening/closing, winter break and spring break re-openings, and end-of-year closing. Residence Life staff must be present during all openings and closings, and other blackout dates.* Assess students for damages, lockouts, lock changes, etc. and send proper documentation to Senior Associate Director of Residence Life. This will involve assisting in the coordination of room changes, check out, withdrawals, etc.

Minimum QualificationsBachelor's and at least 3 years experience - (experience combination of college experience, work with a minor in summer camp/residential boarding school, and software applications).
