PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

Responsibilities in the Lifeguard position involve safeguarding the safety and well-being of beach and pool patrons. The assignment of Water Safety Instructor includes planning and conducting water safety and swimming lessons. Both assignments include remaining vigilant, enforcing rules, and responding promptly to emergencies. These roles extend beyond reactive measures; and are expected to proactively contribute to a secure environment by conducting daily inspections of emergency equipment.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintains vigilant surveillance of swimming areas to ensure a safe and secure environment for all patrons.Enforces swimming area rules and regulations to prevent accidents and promote a positive experience for participants.Reacts promptly and effectively to all emergencies, providing immediate assistance and summoning additional help as needed.Conducts daily inspections of emergency apparatus and reports any issues for timely resolution.Remains familiar with the location of emergency equipment, the facility layout, telephone locations, and emergency protocols.Maintains accurate and detailed daily logs of program participants, tracking attendance, incidents, and observations.Stay current with lifeguard training, CPR, and first aid certifications through regular training sessions.Performs related work as required.Additional duties of the Water Safety Instructor assignment include:

Plan and conduct water safety and swimming lessons following established curriculum and guidelines.Assess the swimming abilities of participants and provide constructive feedback for improvement.Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages skill development and water safety awareness.EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Lifeguard: must be 16 years of age or older at time of application.

Water Safety Instructor assignment: must be 17 years of age or older at time of application. Must have a minimum of 1 year of Water Safety, Lifeguard, or related experience.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Proficient swimming skills.Ability to maintain constant surveillance and quickly identify potential risks or emergencies.Ability to collaborate with other lifeguards and facility staff.Ability to make swift and accurate decisions, especially during emergency situations.Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure and in dynamic situations.Knowledge of on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies.Effective planning and organizational skills.In-depth understanding of safety protocols and guidelines relevant to water activities, including emergency response protocols.Ability to take control in an emergency situation.Ability to take direction and initiative.Must be able to work flexible hours, as programming may include evening and weekend schedules.Additional Knowledge, Experience, Skills, & Abilities of the Water Safety Instructor include:A strong understanding of effective methods for teaching swimming skills and water safety principles to individuals of various ages and abilities.Ability to develop and implement structured lesson plans that align with water safety and swimming skill progression is ideal.Strong communication skills to clearly explain and demonstrate water safety concepts and swimming techniques.Ability to adapt teaching methods to suit the learning styles and abilities of different individuals.Patience is crucial when working with learners of varying skill levels, especially beginners.Ability to observe and assess students' progress, providing constructive feedback for improvement.Ability to manage a class of diverse participants, ensuring a safe and positive learning environment.NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Agility and physical fitness to be mobile, stand, and swim for extended periods of time, both indoors and outdoors.Current First Aid certificationLifeguard:•Current Lifeguard certification•Current CPR certification

Water Safety Instructor:•Current Water Safety Instructor certification•Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer, or equivalent.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This "Non Tested" position may be General or Special Funds.

This part time position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of part time employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time.

Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 calendar days.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check,and (2) a pre-employment drug screening in accordance with the City's Drug Free Workplace Policy*.
