The on-site Desktop Support Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of technology resources within the College of Design. College of Design through rigorous commitments to creativity, diversity, and advancing technologies, the College of Design uses innovation and education to address emerging issues, identify problems, frame creative approaches, and generate solutions - all while adhering to socially responsible, sustainable principles and inclusive, collaborative design processes.This position provides front-line technical assistance to students, faculty, and staff, supporting their academic and professional endeavors. The specialist will troubleshoot hardware and software issues, maintain classroom technology, assist with computer deployments, and contribute to the overall IT infrastructure of the college.Responsibilities:Job Classification: 8631IM - IT Pro 1Reports to: IT Manager (College of Design)Salary Range: $58,000 - $68,00040% End-User Support:Provide timely and effective technical support to students, faculty, and staff, addressing hardware and software issues related to desktops, laptops, mobile devices, and peripherals.Assist with account management, software installations, and troubleshooting network connectivity problems.Maintain a high level of customer service and professionalism in all interactions.

15% Classroom Technology Support:Ensure the proper functioning of audiovisual equipment, projectors, smart boards, and other classroom technologies.Troubleshoot technical problems during lectures and presentations.Assist faculty with integrating technology into their teaching methods.

15% Computer Deployments and Lifecycle:Prepare new computers for deployment, including imaging, software installations, and configuration.Assist with the replacement and disposal of outdated hardware.Maintain accurate inventory records of college-owned devices.

5% Documentation and Knowledge Management:Create and maintain clear and concise documentation for technical procedures, troubleshooting guides, and user manuals.Contribute to the college's knowledge base by sharing technical expertise and solutions.

15% Project Support:Collaborate with IT staff and faculty on projects related to technology upgrades, software implementations, and classroom renovations.Provide technical input and assistance during project planning and execution.

10% Other Duties:Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry best practices.Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance technical skills.Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:BA/BS degree in Information Technology or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least four yearsExperience:Minimum of 2 years of experience in desktop support or a similar technical role.Demonstrated experience troubleshooting hardware and software issues in a Windows and macOS environment.Familiarity with audiovisual equipment and classroom technologies.

Skills:Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:Experience working in a higher education environment.Knowledge of design software and applications.Certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft Certified Professional.Prior experience in Jamf, Configuration Manager/Intune

Working Environment:This position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.The specialist will be required to work in various locations throughout the College of Design, including classrooms, labs, and offices.Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.The University of Minnesota is an equal opportunity employer and educator.
