Description

Join the City of New Hope's Community Development team of eight as one of two housing/code enforcement inspectors. Under the supervision of the director, you will perform inspections and enforcement work related to the city's housing maintenance programs, municipal ordinances and state building codes. New Hope City Hall was built in 2019 and includes individual workspaces for all members of the department and a climate-controlled garage for inspector vehicles. New Hope is a fully built out city of approximately 22,000 residents and just over 6,000 properties. Located 8 miles northwest of Minneapolis, it occupies 5.1 square miles. Staff works closely with members of other departments and the City Council to keep the city a safe, clean and enjoyable place to live and work. City inspectors play a key role in ensuring the proper maintenance and construction of both residential and commercial properties.Examples of Duties

Essential Functions

Performs inspections and follows up on non-compliant properties for the city's rental registration and code compliance programs.Administers the rental inspection program by conducting regular inspections of rental units, buildings and properties and by responding to complaints.Assists in maintaining up-to-date records of the city's rental housing stock.Coordinates with the police department and community development department to identify, keep record of and follow-up on disorderly behavior activities at rental properties.Assists with the city's Code Compliance (point-of-sale) program by conducting code compliance inspections.Provides data tracking of inspections and code violations and completes related administrative activities.Communicates with property owners to explain and interpret housing codes, property maintenance codes and applicable building codes.Tactfully works with property owners and occupants to bring deficient structures and properties into compliance with city requirements.Keeps current with information on housing inspection practices.Assists the Building Official and the General Inspector with code enforcement and field inspections related to zoning, land use and nuisance complaints.Responds to property maintenance and related nuisance complaints, such as waste receptacle screening, outside storage and vehicle issues, in a timely manner and follows up with necessary code enforcement measures.Assists with annual special or conditional use permit inspections.Investigates zoning ordinance violations; interprets city codes; enforces codes or communicates finding to appropriate person.Communicates with residents and property owners to resolve identified violations.Prepares and maintains a variety of correspondences and reports such as forms, letters, informational materials, memos, inquiries and activity reports.Maintains thorough documentation of records, inspections and correspondence.Acts as an informational resource for residents.Identifies inconsistencies in code provisions and recommends code revisions.Assists the City Attorney in pursuit of legal remedies, if necessary, to carry out the enforcement duties.Works in cooperation with all other city departments and inspectors.

Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or GED and moderate experience working in building or construction, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements
