Overview/Qualifications/Responsibilities
Job Summary
Operates conventional, special purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines to fabricate metallic and non-metallic parts. Responsible for maintaining high productivity rate and meeting quality requirements.
Essential Functions:
Operate assigned machinery to fabricate parts to the required specifications by:Reading work orders and specification sheets before starting the machine.Properly powering up and down the machine.Loading and unloading parts.Ensuring proper tooling for each machine.Creating and sizing jaws on the machine.Changing chucking devices when necessary.Recognizing insert and tool geometry.Making offset adjustments for size.Ensures all parts are to the required specifications by:Maintaining and continuously improving the quality of parts produced.Reading blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.Verifying conformance of finished work piece specifications.Complying with all work instructions.Following and maintaining ISO and Schafer procedures.Completing Schafer's quality certification requirements for assigned area.Ensure the operational effectiveness of all assigned equipment by:Conducting all assigned and necessary preventative maintenance procedures.Starting and observing machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.Conferring with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining problems.Responsible for supporting the Schafer Business Process by:Maintaining and continuously improving productivity of assigned machines.Measuring, marking, and scribing dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.Continuously looking at tool life and new tooling to cut costs on tools.Reducing downtime of machines setupsGetting computer setup ready by preparing tooling, fixtures, steel, gages, etc. for jobs located in Kanban locations at assigned machines.Maintaining the 6S program in assigned area.Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the company by:Channeling problems and/or complaints to appropriate person for resolution.Supporting all Schafer policies and procedures.Reporting to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed.Providing input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvements.Resolving problems.Performing other job-related duties as required.Helping evaluate job applicant's knowledge for the cell prior to Schafer hiring.Passing along vital information in the logbook for subsequent shifts.Training new personnel in the operation of assigned machines.Assisting and/or training in other lathe areas as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 50 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc.Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take messages in a legible, accurate manner.Two plus years of experience ideal.Must be able to communicate in English.Ability to use a computerWorking Conditions:
Air conditioned/heated manufacturing facility with possible exposure to noise; dust; fumes; physical, chemical, and biohazards; solvents, oils, and detergents.
This job is to be performed at the designated facility 100% of the time unless directed otherwise by manager/supervisor.
