Senior Photonic Design Engineer

Lumoniq, Austin, TX, United States

Who we are

Lumoniq is pioneering data communications for micro-electronic systems. Our innovations will enable a multi-generational interconnect scaling roadmap that will forever change the way micro-electronic and computing systems are built.

We are looking for best-in-class engineers who can simultaneously delve deep and think broadly in device and circuit design. We highly value interpersonal skills on par with technical expertise and seek individuals who treat others with dignity and respect. If you are a team player who wants to change the world, we want you on our tight-knit team!

Role Overview

In this role, you will develop photonic components for high-speed, multi-hundred-Giga-baud designs for novel PHY systems. Your responsibilities will include designing a variety of innovative photonic components using both analytical methods and numerical simulations. Additionally, you will design new testbeds to characterize and validate models and designs in both the electrical and optical domains.

You will be collaborating with a highly skilled group of engineers and physicists. Your models will be incorporated into the design flow of next-generation, high-speed communication chips. This role offers a unique opportunity to participate in bringing new technology from the R&D stage to engineering and production, working closely with researchers and engineering teams from partner organizations who are world leaders in implementing our products into final applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop novel photonic components for high-speed, multi-hundred-Giga-baud PHY systems.
  • Use analytical and numerical simulation methods to design components and create circuit models using industry-standard Electronic/Photonic Design Automation (EPDA) tools and languages (e.g., Verilog, Spice, etc.).
  • Create testbeds to characterize and validate designs in both electrical and optical domains.
  • Integrate models into EPDA design flows for next-generation high-speed communication chips.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and physicists in photonics/CMOS and collaborate with researchers and engineering teams from partner organizations to implement products.

Work Environment

During the initial phase of the position, the engagement will be hybrid with required travel to Austin, TX for in-person team meetings once or twice a month. Candidates located within North America will be preferred.

Required skills and experience; Ways to stand out from the crowd

  • Education: M.S./PhD in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Over 5 years of industry experience is preferred.
  • Experience: Physical design and modeling of photonic integrated circuits. Preference will be given to industry experience and a proven track record with industry-standard EPDA design tools. Experience in design-of-experiment approaches is also highly desirable.
  • Expertise: Strong understanding and experience with key building blocks of photonic integrated circuits, from device physics to circuit-level design and layout.
  • Technical Skills: Extensive background and experience in the electromagnetic design of high-speed photonic active/passive components, including all key waveguiding mechanisms in both the mm-wave and optical regimes. Experience in analytical, numerical, and behavioral modeling using industry-standard EPDA tools, methods, standards, and modeling languages (e.g., Lumerical, Spice, Verilog, etc.).
  • Attention to Detail: Proven track record of autonomy, critical thinking, and decision-making to navigate demanding and changing project objectives.
  • Documentation: Comfortable with versioning and design documentation.
  • Quality Focus: Commitment to delivering high-quality results.
  • Teamwork and Communication: Strong team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Leadership: Exposure to leadership or mentorship is an asset.
