Job Description:

Description: The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs routine laboratory tests and analysis of patient specimens for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs assigned tasks for all patient populations and works within one or more designated departments including Chemistry; Hematology; Microbiology/Immunology/Serology; Stat Laboratory; and/or Transfusion Services.

Typical Duties

  1. Performs routine laboratory tests and analysis of patient specimens for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Conducts work within one or more departments and across a variety of clinical areas using standard techniques.
  2. Determines the acceptability of patient samples for analysis. Prepares patient samples in accordance with industry standard methods.
  3. Performs calibration procedures and analysis; verifies the acceptability of Quality Control values prior to analyzing patient samples.
  4. Analyzes patient samples and evaluates the reliability of test results according to age, gender, and specimen acceptability criteria prior to releasing information for use in patient care and treatment.
  5. Performs Laboratory and Hospital Information System (LIS and HIS) computer functions involved in pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic processes.
  6. Performs and documents routine maintenance and minor instrument repairs according to Network and industry standard policies and procedures. Reports concerns as necessary.
  7. Complies with all Federal, State and Local regulatory requirements relative to health care delivery.
  8. Participates in assigned proficiency surveys, performance improvement activities, and mandatory continuing education programs as requested and/or required.
  9. Provides technical guidance, training, and/or orientation to new employees and students.
  10. May perform special collection procedures, writing of procedures, inventory, and record keeping, as assigned or required.
  11. Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
    Required Education and Experience:
  • Associates Degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology from an accredited college or university.
  • OR
  • Documented evidence that meets qualifications as established by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988 (CLIA 88) are met.

  • Required Licensure/Certification:
  • Documented evidence of registration as a MLT through ASCP, AMT or equivalent
  • Registry-eligible individuals can be hired and will have one year to pass an ASCP or equivalent registry; and must maintain certification throughout employment.

  • Preferred Education and Experience:
  • 1 plus year experience performing a variety of routine clinical laboratory analysis.
