The specialist

  • demonstrates a commitment to quality and excellence promoting Emory as a Center of Excellence.
  • Provides ECLS (Extra Corporeal Life Support) care to patients within scope of Nurse Practice Act & NBRC (Respiratory Therapist) in collaboration with ECMO Program Leadership and the multidisciplinary healthcare team for the provision of care that meets programmatic and patient-centered goals.
  • Under supervision of ECMO Program Leadership, the ECMO Specialist will function as a clinical navigator for ECMO patients during the acute phase of care, subacute phase, and outpatient follow-up as needed.
  • assists with cannulation, decannulation, and provide daily ECMO management throughout the Emory Healthcare System as needed.
  • Assists clinical teams with transport of ECMO patients.
  • Provides rapid expert assessment and clinical interventions for patients on ECMO with device related emergencies.
  • Inventories and replenishes ECMO supplies on ECMO Carts/Supply Room as necessary Assists with ECMO equipment inventory and maintenance; including emergency backup equipment.
  • Participates in process improvement for the program and for the quality of clinical outcomes.
  • Participates in providing ongoing ECMO education for clinicians throughout the medical center including critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, faculty and resident physicians, and advanced practice providers.
  • Follows emerging trends in the field by reading and sharing published peer reviewed journal articles and participating in department/EMORY sponsored ECMO education opportunities.
  • Completes required regulatory and Program specific competencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or respiratory therapy.
  • Georgia License or eligible for Georgia License.
  • Minimum 3 years of critical care experience or has completed an approved ECLS training program.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for Healthcare Providers issued by either the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required within 30 days of hire.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated competency in critical care, interpersonal relationship skills, leadership ability, commitment to the organization and flexibility.
  • Experience building positive working relationships and facilitating high functioning teams.
  • Strong leadership capabilities through communication, education and management.
  • ECMO/MCS experience preferred.
