The Alaska Bar Association is seeking a Pro Bono Director to handle the oversight, direction and management of the pro bono and volunteer outreach for the Alaska Bar Association. The Alaska Bar has approximately 4,700 attorney members and the Pro Bono Director increases access to justice by utilizing the skills and expertise of attorney volunteers.

Primary Responsibilities:

Maintain and develop current pro bono programs and explore options for creating new programs or expanding access to justice programs in the community, especially in rural areas of Alaska.

Implement events and activities to recruit, train, recognize, and educate legal professionals and the public to improve access to justice statewide.

Put on Martin Luther King Day of Service and Elizabeth Peratrovich Legal Clinics: recruit volunteers, organize logistics (venue, food, prepare budget, etc.), and document event data.

Serve as the staff administrator for Alaska Free Legal Answers website by monitoring the site, recruiting volunteers, and responding to contact questions.

Staff Alaska Bar committees relating to pro bono and volunteerism: help draft agendas, take minutes, execute action items, and provide logistical support.

Foster relationships with other pro bono legal service providers, Alaska Court, community members, and organizations.

Follow changes in the access to justice arena to keep informed of needs and identify partnership opportunities.

Coordinate with other Alaska Bar departments.

Help arrange community outreach visits to help identify access to justice needs.

Recruit, train, support, and mentor volunteer attorneys as needed.

Maintain records and statistics on pro bono and volunteer efforts.

Report to Board of Governors on pro bono and access to justice initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required; JD a plus.

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines while consistently delivering accurate and high-quality work.

Strong computer skills, proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Excel, and various other computer applications such as Zoom and Teams.

Ability to understand and explain available Bar and other public services and programs.

Experience in event planning, law, non-profit associations, and marketing is preferred.

Strong project management, people management, and public speaking skills.

Ability to travel to support programs and events.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary $60,000 to $90,000 per year, depending on experience and education. Non-attorney salary range $60,000-70,000, attorney salary range $65,000-$90,000. The Bar offers excellent employee benefits, including: 100% employer-paid medical, dental, vision, and $5,000 health reimbursement account; 401K program; hybrid working locations available, 12 paid holidays and 21 days of paid leave per year, with increases in leave accrual based on years of service; and covered parking.
