POSITION SUMMARY:Under supervision of the Aquatics Director and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Swim Lesson Coordinator is responsible for leading, organizing and teaching swim lessons according to the Red Cross swim program or to the YMCA of the USA program standards.

Principle Activities:

Teach swim lessons according to the YMCA of the USA standardsCreate a positive learning environment through personal enthusiasmBe safety-conscious, maintain order and enforce rules during lessons to ensure swimmer safetyKeep accurate records of attendance and skills achieved by each student, each sessionProvide each student with written records of progressUse swimming aids effectively to maximize each individual’s practice timeUtilize written lesson plans for each lesson to make the most efficient use of class timeAssist in planning and leading staff meeting and in-service trainingServe as new swim instructor mentor and trainerConduct evaluations on new swim instructorsAssist in Program evaluation processAssist in parent/participant orientationEffectively communicate with parentsServe as pool deck manager if Director is unavailableAssist with supervising and evaluating swim instructorsAssist with swim instructor scheduled to include roster distributionCarry out additional duties as assigned by supervisor

Effect on End Result:Each Lead swim instructor will be evaluated based on the degree to which:

A safe and positive environment will be created for all aquatic participantsA quality reputation is maintained for the YMCA aquatic program in the communityHigh quality instruction for student as shown through program evaluationsMember and program participants evaluations reflect satisfactionTeam work is promoted and demonstratedGrowth of swim lessons in participation and revenue production

All staff are relationship builders in their particular program or service area and they will:

Welcome/acknowledge each child and parent in a pleasant and friendly manner (e.g., greet, smile, make eye contact);Be open and actively listen to questions, concerns and feelings of children, parents and staff, dealing with them honestly, respectfully and positively (e.g., Yes, I hear your concern; Yes, I can help you; Yes, I can get you that information);Handle multiple tasks in a calm and responsible way always affirming the child or parent (e.g., appropriately disciplining one child while continuing the class for the other children);Build child and parent relationships by showing interest, caring and responsiveness to child’s progress (e.g., meet each parent during the session giving progress information, give child immediate feedback on skill progress);Continuously inquire regarding the quality of member visits, offering additional activities/programs that may be of interest to the member (e.g., “Did you know about our water aerobics program on Tuesdays and Thursdays?”).I understand that the first 5-10 minutes of each class will be spent taking attendance, seeing that children get to their proper classes, listening and problem-solving any parent concerns. I will make sure all classes start and end on time.I understand that I am expected to get in the water and assist swim instructors no later than 10 minutes after class starts. I also understand that with 5 minutes left in class, I will exit the pool and check with parents and get ready for the next class. The only exception to this is if I am assisting parents by answering questions or troubleshooting a problem.I understand that in case of an instructor calling out and unable to find a substitute, I am responsible for teaching that class from start to finish.I understand that I will keep my immediate supervisor informed of all problems, concerns and progress of all classes during my shift.

Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years oldMust have 3+ years of teaching or coaching experienceMust have a minimum of 1,000 hours of teaching experience and/or continuing educationMust obtain or have a current Red Cross WSI or YMCA Swim Instructor CertificationCurrent certification in the following…
