The Superintendent of Seneca Park Zoo is a key administrative role responsible for overseeing the daily operations and strategic development of the zoological facility. This position directs County staffed departments (Facilities, Animal Care, and Animal Health), and provides indirect supervision over the operations of the Zoo’s business partners, ensuring smooth effective operations and compliance with standards set by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).Key Responsibilities

Program Development and Evaluation:

Develop, implement, and assess zoo programs to enhance operational effectiveness and visitor experience.Budget Management:

Coordinate with the Parks Department leadership to prepare and monitor budgets, manage procurement processes, and ensure efficient use of resources.Staff Supervision:

Lead and supervise a team of over 60 staff members, including four direct reports. Foster a collaborative and productive work environment between the Zoo's business partners and staff. Conduct annual appraisals for direct report staff, and ensure all appraisals are completed for the year. Recognize excellent behavior/work, and provide counseling/discipline for deficient behavior/work.Committee Leadership:

Chair the Safety Committee, Animal Welfare Committee, and Animal Collection Committee, ensuring the programs are up to date, and their adherence to best practices and regulatory standards.Partner and Operational Support:

Provide indirect supervision and support to Zoo partner operations, including programs managed by the Zoo Society and The SSA Group. Assist, as needed, with conservation action planning, guest programming, public relations, education, volunteer recruitment, fundraising, and operations related to food and gift concessions.Communication Facilitation:

Provides frequent and critical communications between Zoo stakeholders (County/Department Leadership, Zoo Society, The SSA Group, Zoo Staff). The Superintendent is responsible for ensuring cohesion and uniform direction of the Zoo. Communications take the form of frequent digital or face-to-face meetings, emails, phone, and text messaging. This position is often public facing and should feel comfortable with public speaking.Conflict/Problem Mitigation:

Provide periodic counseling to solve conflict situations. Advise direct reports on appropriate conflict resolution steps.Strategic Planning:

Lead long-term planning and development initiatives for the zoo, collaborating closely with Parks Department and County leadership, as well as zoo partners. Along with Zoo partners and stakeholders, develop and maintain a 1 year, 3 year and 5 year strategic plan for the Zoo. Work with Zoo stakeholders to develop an updated/new Zoo master plan as the existing plan retires.Capital Projects:

Work with the Parks Department and County leadership on current and future capital projects for the zoo.Salary: $87,421 - $121,011 annuallyHow to Apply
