Director of Web Services

Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications, the Director of Web Services is responsible for delivering a best-in-class website user experience that stands out in the higher education digital landscape and is in line with the University’s national strategy.

As a key member of the Integrated Marketing and Communications team, this role drives UX web design, aesthetics, content creation, findability, innovation and integration of JCU.edu. The Director of Web Services builds, updates, and maintains John Carroll’s full suite of websites including paid digital landing pages and serves as the technical lead for all web projects. They also oversee the current website redesign, partner with web agency and external partners. The Director of Web Services works with key leadership to develop website governance and lead the campus support.

The Director of Web Services collaborates with enrollment communications to work with Slate portal experiences. The Director of Web Services proactively solves problems and identifies processes and systems for delivering a web experience focused primarily on enrollment marketing.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and support WordPress/Drupal themes, plugins, modules, views, etc. for the campus CMS installations, including custom theming.

Oversee web server including maintenance, monitoring, patching, and full DevOps cycle. Manage any server issues/downtime. Continually assess hosting platform and make recommendations as needed.

Manage junior team member(s) as needed.

Develop and maintain landing pages, micro sites, and any other event/announcement pages.

Continuously improve university microsites (codebase, design, and functionality).

Collaborate with university’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department on continued ways to streamline and integrate the work between Marketing, Communications, and ITS.

Develop new web features, functionalities, and exciting interactive experiences per needs of the university with Custom CMS theming.

Fix bugs and troubleshoot issues.

Restructure and maintain web hosting and support to ensure stable, secure websites and apps.

Continuously improve internal campus communication system(s).

Ensure continued web accessibility compliance.

Create and deliver campus training and support for CMS and IMC-managed technology.

Create and update re-usable code libraries to streamline WordPress/Drupal development cycle.

Oversee web content editing, campus CMS training, and management of web requests on campus.

Implement version control for all development workflows.

Assist with measuring and analyzing the success of various web and digital initiatives and make recommendations on improvements.

Work with the department and others on campus to continuously improve the design, information architecture, quality, and accuracy of web content.

Define and reinforce web standards and policies, assist with creation of new policies.

Provide creative direction and collaborate with marketing designers for web graphics, infographics, etc., as needed, to support campus clients.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Web Design, UX/UI Design, Graphic Design, or a related field.

Five or more years of professional web site design experience.

Proven experience as a UX Web Designer with a strong portfolio showcasing web design and content creation projects.

Proficiency in design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Sketch, or similar.

Solid understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Experience with content management systems (CMS) like WordPress, Drupal, and others.

Strong knowledge of SEO best practices and techniques.

Ability to analyze UI/UX to identify best methods for integration.

Exceptional writing, design, communication and organizational skills.

Proficient in Adobe suite and design, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Frontend experience developing and managing websites.

Strong understanding of responsive web design, and experience with responsive frameworks (Bootstrap or Foundation).

Foundational understanding of security concepts and secure code development techniques.

Experience with designing for accessibility.

Experience with conceptual design and creative prototypes as well as tactical UI design and implementation. Ability to produce wireframes, sketches, task flows or other conceptual user interface mockups to support the creation and delivery of new features.

Ability to proactively manage multiple projects and foresee campus needs in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Ability to professionally and ethically handle confidential information.

Higher-ed work experience.

Experience working with Slate.

Experience with project management systems like Basecamp.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience leading a professional web redesign.

Experience with Slate.

Experience in additional programming languages such as Python or Ruby, as well as modern JS frameworks such as react, vue, or node.

Solid understanding with tracking metrics through Google Analytics, Search Console and monitoring tools.

Experience with digital photography and Adobe Photoshop to create compelling graphics/advertising banners.

Experience with digital marketing.

Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions

This position works in person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. However this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations.

Physical Requirements

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
