$159,494.40 - $193,856.00 annually. This position is scheduled to receive a 6% increase with the Council adoption on September 17, 2024.THE POSITION:Hayward is excited to announce an opportunity to join its progressive and dynamic Transportation Division as a Principal Transportation Engineer. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Public Works, the Principal Transportation Engineer will play a key role in delivering a safer, more sustainable transportation system for the City of Hayward. This individual will be a motivated, creative professional who will help deliver implementation of the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, Local Road Safety Plan, and Vision Zero initiative.

The individual will support many projects and programs, including:

Managing the City's Traffic Management Center and developing strategic enhancements to the City’s signal system.

Managing select transportation staff and reviewing work products for team members.

Leading transportation planning and design studies including complete streets and multimodal street design projects.

Coordinating with partner agencies to deliver major regional transportation projects.

Providing overall support to the Deputy Director.

What you will do:Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Support and advise the Deputy Director of Public Works-Transportation in the development and implementation of the Division’s goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.

Plan, organize, direct and evaluate the assigned function and activities of the Transportation Division.

Perform complex and advanced transportation engineering functions.

Represent the City on various boards and advocate effectively for transportation matters.

Support bicycle and pedestrian initiatives and Complete Streets projects.

Conduct and review transportation and traffic studies to ensure compliance with standards.

Manage the preparation of updates to the Traffic Impact Fee (TIF) programs.

Assist in the update of the General Plan Circulation Element.

Administer and manage the City’s Traffic Operations Center and signal systems.

Evaluate grant opportunities and prepare grant applications.

Direct and monitor the City’s street signing and striping maintenance program.

Prepare reports and meeting materials, and conduct presentations to City Council and community groups.

Participate in operating budget and Capital Improvement Program (CIP) preparation.

Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and the public.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONSYou have:

Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible professional transportation engineering experience, including two (2) years of supervisory experience.

Education: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Traffic/Transportation Engineering or a closely related field.

License: Registration as a Professional Civil or Traffic Engineer in the State of California. An out-of-state P.E. or T.E. will be accepted but will require the candidate to obtain California registration within a year of being hired. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License.
