Museum Equity Specialist – Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Museum Director, this position coordinates and implements a variety of activities and programs that implement curatorial and educational goals linked to DEAI, grounded in museum exhibitions and collections. The programs range from expanding outreach and deep engagement with MSU’s diverse students (and other targeted audiences) to providing tours, to coordinating special public programs such as panels and lectures. Responsibilities include engaging with students and student representatives to conceive and execute new programs of informal education focused on equity; work with curators to implement relevant programs including equity-focused public tours, and lectures and panels with a social justice focus; and work with museum director to implement other special programs. This position is also responsible for gathering data and qualitative information from implemented programs, assess impact, and create reports to improve and track learning outcomes and visitor experience.Characteristic Duties/ResponsibilitiesDesire, competence, and aptitude to engage a diverse student population from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, ideologies, populations, including personal and social orientations (e.g. nationality, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, ability, class, and other social identities).Knowledge and ability to communicate proficiently, effectively and efficiently on matters of DEAI and competent understanding of intersectionality, implicit bias, explicit bias, gender roles and relations, privilege, marginalization and oppressions, microaggressions, social justice, cultural appropriation, inclusive learning environments, and racial literacy.Plan and implement equity driven programs, special programs, and tours.Extraordinary public speaking abilities.Superb communication skills in a fast-paced environment.Significant project management and implementation skills (meet deadlines, work within budgets and timelines, and implement programs including taking down program set-up).Ability to collect, analyze, and report quantitative and qualitative data to measure and report program impact.Must possess strong technology skills including website applications; email, calendar, spreadsheets, and presentation software, social media acumen, word processing, and photo design and other software provided by MSU for the development of this position.Ability to carry objects of 40 pounds.Driver’s license.Work collaboratively with the MSU Broad Team to offer general museum event support as assigned.The use of a particular expression or illustration describing duties shall not be held to exclude other duties not mentioned that are of similar kind or level of difficulty.Required Degree:

Other - Liberal Arts or related fieldDesired Degree:

Bachelors - Liberal Arts or related fieldKnowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in liberal arts or related field (Social Work, Education, Counseling, Communications) with an art focus.Two to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in planning and overseeing youth programs and adult programs (conferences, lectures, panels) and special events, including public relations, organizing and disseminating training materials and information both written and web-based.Knowledge and ability to communicate proficiently, effectively and efficiently on matters of DEAI.Knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations; planning and implementing in a timely fashion; ability to meet deadlines and budgets; appropriate, adequate and professional communications skills at all times.Desired Qualifications:Bachelor’s or master’s degree, or equivalent experience in liberal arts or related field (Social Work, Education, Counseling, Higher Education, Communications) with an art focus.Specialization in advocacy, outreach and work with young adults.Two to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive experience in community or cultural center environment.Required Application Materials:Cover letter explaining interests and qualifications for this positionResumeThree Professional ReferencesSummary of Physical Demands:
